Prospect Watch: 2015 Safety, Van Smith

West Mecklenburg (N.C.) High 2015 athlete, Van Smith has seven offers and is hearing from U-M.

Auburn HILLS, Mich.--West Mecklenburg (N.C.) High 2015 athlete, Van Smith is an athletic safety that showed good length and speed at the back end of the defense at the Midwest Elite 7v7 Passing Tournament last weekend.

At 6-foot-1, 180-pounds, Smith already has seven offers including Kansas State, Clemson, Vanderbilt and Penn State, to name a few. He plays on a loaded a 7-on-7 team but certainly sticks out amongst his fellow teammates.

"I made All-Conference at safety first-team (last season.)" Smith told GoBlueWolverine. "I was a power hitter who came down hill and a cover guy."

At the time of the interview, Smith said he would be visiting Ann Arbor with his teammates for an unofficial visit to Michigan's campus after the tournament on Sunday. He said the Wolverines' have made an effort to reach his high school coach and were supposed to call his school this week.

While Smith admits he doesn't know too much about the Maize and Blue, he says what he does know is all positive.

"I know they are a big school," he said. "They are Division-1 program. They work hard and play fast. I like that. Work hard and play fast, that's where I want to be."

As far as when he steps on to Michigan's campus, Smith says he hope to meet nice people.

"Cool people, nice coaches that get along," he said. "I want to see a nice facility. Overall, I just want to see cool people."

With two years left of high school football and recruiting remaining, Smith says Clemson is his early favorite. However, that can all change when he starts taking visits, he said. As he says he is "open" to go anywhere in the country.

"I'm just looking for somewhere I can play. I want to play right away," he said.

Smith says he hasn't seen enough schools to know when he is going to make his final decision yet. But in the meantime, he plans on camping at Vanderbilt, Kansas State and Clemson this summer.
