Mayes has nearly 20 offers on the table, but unless something dramatic happens in the following weeks, he'll be deciding between the six schools he listed. Other programs continue to express interest in the 6-foot-5, 330-pounder; Texas and Texas A&M have visited Van Alstyne recently to check in on the big prospect.
So what about each school nabbed them on Mayes' list of top schools? Mayes detailed to FOX Sports NEXT on why each program made the cut.
TCU: "I like TCU because I grew up a Horned Frog. My grandpa and my dad played there. We had season tickets and went to most of the home games. I've been going to TCU football camps since fourth grade. I've built a strong relationship with all the coaches at TCU throughout the process."
Oklahoma: "Oklahoma is one of my bigger offers. I really like coach Bedenbaugh, the offensive line coach. They also produce a lot of NFL players. I would like to learn more about the school and build a stronger relationship with the coaches."
Minnesota: "Minnesota is in my top six not only because my brother is going there, but because of the players and the coaches there. I love coach Limegrover and Coach Kill. Coach Kill is making a huge difference in the program and I think that Minnesota is about to start surprising a lot of people."
Texas Tech: "I really like Texas Tech. My mom also went to school there. Tech was one of my favorite spring visits. I had a lot of one-on-one time with the coaches and got to meet some of the players. Coach Hays is awesome! They told me that I would be competing to be a starter when I got there I and I thought that was pretty cool."
Baylor: "I like Baylor because of the coaches. Coach Clements is great. The new stadium they're getting is sweet!
Kansas State: "K-State was one of my earlier offers and I fell in love with the school when I went up there. They atmosphere on game day is crazy. Coach Dickey is one of my favorite coaches that I've met so far. I saw them practice and I really like the way he coaches. He thinks I could play anywhere on the line. It would be awesome to play for Coach Snyder and Coach Dickey at K-State."
