Ohio Kicker Opening Eyes

Ohio kicker Vlassios Pizanias has used the summer trying to open the eyes of college coaches and earn a scholarship. How busy has Pizanias been? We look at the many camps and performances from the past month.

The recruiting journey for punters and kickers is never easy and Hubbard (Ohio) specialist Vlassios Pizanias has learned it the hard way the past month despite having some impressive camps.

Pizanias, who is trained by Paul McFadden and Jeff Wilkins in Youngstown, Ohio also works during the summer with former Miami Hurricane punter John Kontodiakos and has showed solid skill and a strong leg in several camps.

"I was invited to their camp by Coach (Greg) Mattison," said Pizanias. "I placed first in punting and finished top of the camp for kickoffs and field goals.

"During camp our films were critiqued by former Michigan punter and current NFL punter Zoltan Mesko. I was the only one at camp who didn't have to change the way they punted or kicked the ball and he used me as a punting example.

"Special teams coach (Dan) Ferrigno really took a liking to me but I was told there would not be a scholarship offer."

"Toledo invited me to a Junior Elite Day and I got a chance to meet the coaching staff and head coach Matt Campbell. Coach Campbell told me they were going to offer me a scholarship and invited me to camp.

"I attended camp this past week and came in first place for punting and kickoffs. Coach (Stan) Watson said to give them a couple of weeks and I would know more about a possible offer."

"Miami Ohio coach (Andrew) Marlett invited me to the camp they held on Saturday after he saw me at the Michigan camp. I had a great camp but there were no competitions. However, I did everything they requested perfectly and at the end of camp Coach Marlett said I was at the top of his list for an offer. Right now they have not offered yet.

"I camped at Notre Dame and warmed up with punts for the first 10 minutes of camp and then a special teams coach and Jamie Kohl pulled four guys who they already knew to the side and had them compete for the scholarship instead of everyone else.

"Our family knows Purdue head coach Darrell Hazel from when he was at Kent State and my cousin Derrell Johnson Koulianos spoke with Coach Hazell on my behalf. I'll be sending my information to him soon.

"Our family is also familiar with Michigan State and Coach (Mark) Dantonio and Coach (Pat) Naruzzi through Miami assistant coach Nick Siatris. So I'm hoping to reach out to them as I'm sure they don't know that I'm good at punting and kicking or even know me by name."
