Here's a recruiting breakdown of the defensive players from the West participating in The Opening June 30- July 3. The group is led by a strong crop of defensive backs, arguably the strongest position out west this year.

Defensive Lineman:

Marcus Griffin, Bellevue (Wash.)
Skinny: Griffin committed early to Washington State and said he's very solid but look for other schools to jump on him if Griffin performs as well as expected this week.

Ainuu Taua, Lompoc (Calif.)
Skinny: UCLA, Ole Miss, Washington and Wisconsin currently top his list with the Bruins probably the team to beat.

Joey Alfieri, Portland (Ore.) Jesuit
Skinny: Arizona, California, Oregon State, Stanford and Wisconsin appear to be the top teams for Alfieri with the Cardinal holding a slight edge.

D.J. Calhoun, El Cerrito (Calif.)
Skinny: Calhoun will announce at The Opening with UCLA and USC the team to beat. The Trojans could have the edge here.

Jamardre Cobb, Los Angeles (Calif.) Salesian
Skinny: There are whispers that Cobb could make a decision shortly after The Opening. The linebacker has a pretty big list but Arizona and Oklahoma are two schools believed to be high on his board.

Dwight Williams, Gardena (Calif.) Serra
Skinny: Williams will visit Florida and Michigan and is also giving a hard look at local school, UCLA. After that, the ‘backer is wide open and still not close to narrowing down his list of 15 schools.

Defensive Backs:

Budda Baker, Bellevue (Wash.)
Skinny: Baker has maintained a top three of Oregon, UCLA and Washington for months and that's still the case. Arizona State and Notre Dame round out his top five.

Naijiel Hale, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco
Skinny: Hale will make his college choice at The Opening among Arizona, Arizona State, California, Utah and Washington State. The Wildcats are the team to beat here.

Adoree Jackson, Gardena (Calif.) Serra
Skinny: Jackson said he definitely plans to visit Florida, LSU and Michigan. Local schools UCLA and USC are also heavily involved but the athlete won't announce until Signing Day.

Jonathan Lockett, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
Skinny: Lockett will make his announcement at The Opening from among Oregon, UCLA and Washington with the Ducks looking like the best bet at this time.

Iman Marshall, Long Beach Poly (Calif.)- (2015)
Skinny: Just one of five juniors in the event, Marshall has a huge list right now but expect Oregon, UCLA and USC to be in it until the very end for him.

John Plattenburg, Corona (Calif.) Centennial
Skinny: Plattenburg hasn't ruled out an early decision by the end of the summer and Baylor, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Washington and Wisconsin are high on his board.

Adarius Pickett, El Cerrito (Calif.)
Skinny: Pickett has a short list of Arizona State, Cal, UCLA and USC and will likely make his decision early in the season.

Jaleel Wadood, Bellflower (Calif.) St John Bosco
Skinny: The former Arizona State pledge will commit at The Opening from among Cal, UCLA and USC.
