"I have been to Nebraska before," Coach Tony Sanchez said. "I was there for a spring game with Jalen Grimble during his senior season. Many of the things are the same, but there were some differences I noticed.
"Physically the facilities are awesome. It's just gorgeous. And the stadium has changed with the improvements that they are making. It's top five in the country. I was blown away with all of that."
One of the reasons Coach Sanchez came away so impressed with Nebraska was a difference in time he was in Lincoln. The first trip was short, centered around a spring game, while this trip was over days. It also included a day of camp and an exclusive junior day on Saturday.
"This time in Lincoln was different than the first time. That was a short trip, but this time it was three days. We got a chance to spend time with the people and got to see dedication to Nebraska's players on and off the field. I appreciated that as a parent and a coach."
Coach Sanchez didn't travel alone. He brought with him Nick Gates, a standout offensive lineman at Bishop Gorman, who already had an offer from Nebraska. Coach Sanchez said that Gates really enjoyed his time in Lincoln and also said the Huskers are sitting good with the lineman.
"Nick really didn't have to go to Nebraska because he already had an offer. He just wanted to go there and play, get back out on the field, because it's fun. I know that he got some tips on technique and really performed fantastic while he was there.
"I know that Nick had a great time while he was there working with Coach Barney Cotton and Coach John Garrison. Coach Cotton is phenomenal to work with. It's a great school and Nebraska is in good position for him."
Coach Sanchez also brought his standout junior tight end, Alize Jones, who is also holding an offer from the Huskers. Jones has a long process in front of him and will likely be one of the most sought after tight ends over the next two years.
"This is just all new for Alize," Coach Sanchez said. "It was his first trip, it was really Nick's first trip too, and it's the beginning of a long process for Alize since he will just be a junior. I know that he was surprised by a lot of things that he saw in Nebraska and that he had a great trip."
Another player that made the trip with Coach Sanchez, Gates and Jones is senior lineman Zack Singer. Singer came in search of a Nebraska offer, worked out on both sides of the line for the Nebraska staff while in camp and according to Coach Sanchez had a great camp.
"I really thought that Singer performed great. He's such a grinder. I don't know if I have ever coached a tougher player in all my years than Zack. He's just so strong. He chews up a weight room and he's a real leader. He worked very hard out there in Lincoln on both sides of the ball."
