The Opening: Garrald McDowell Update

BEAVERTON, Oregon - Garrald McDowell has a top five and all schools have one thing in common. Find out what and much more right here...

If you are a top football prospect in the state of Louisiana, you want a scholarship offer from LSU.

It took a little while for that to happen with Garrald McDowell, but the offer from the Tigers finally came.

"It felt great to finally get that LSU offer and that that weight off of my shoulders. Being from Louisiana, I wanted that offer, so it feels good to have it. I now can just get back to work and keep trying to get better," McDowell said from The Opening.

LSU offering a little later than most schools does not hurt their chances with the four-star out of Covington.'s complete coverage of The Opening 2013 presented by NIKE
"I have a lot of interest in LSU and they are one of my top five. I like how close to home LSU is so my family can get there to see me play, I like Coach Brick Haley, I like how they produce a lot of top defensive linemen, and I like how they compete every game."

Other than LSU, McDowell listed Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Ole Miss as schools in his top five. All five are SEC schools.

He has visits to LSU (July 15) and Ole Miss (July 19) planned and he has already visited Florida this summer.

He talks about what he liked about his visit to UF and what stands out to him about the Rebels.

"My visit to Florida went well and I liked it a lot. I got to spend time with Coach [Will] Muschamp and we got along great. I like them and that is why they are in my top five.

"I have been to Ole Miss three or four times already and I like the coaching staff, the environment there, and the academics. Me and Coach [Chris] Kiffin are cool too."

McDowell is not sure when he will be ready to commit to a school, but he did not rule out a decision before his senior season.

He is being recruited by some schools to play end while others like him as a defensive tackle. He is OK with either position.
