Four-star Hooker Breaks Down Commitment

New Castle (Pa.) High four-star athlete Malik Hooker talks about his commitment to Ohio State, and what swayed the Buckeyes in his favor.

New Castle (Pa.) High four-star athlete Malik Hooker wanted to make a decision before his senior season, and with the start of training camp creeping closer, he did just that.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Hooker called Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to give him the news his recruitment was over.

"I called coach Meyer to commit," Hooker said. "It was great. He kept asking me if I was serious, and he put all the other coaches on the phone. It was just great. I'm happy it's over with. Now, all the pressure is off so I can now focus on high school and finishing it out before I head to college."

Hooker said he also spoke with Buckeyes assistant Luke Fickell, who was his main recruiter, about his decision. He added he chose the Buckeyes over Pittsburgh.

"I just felt the time was right," Hooker said. "I sat down with my coaches and my family and we talked about it. When I went there the first time I felt a spark, and that it was the place to be." Hooker had a top six of Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech.

However, from the moment Ohio State started recruiting him, and he visited campus, he felt a connection with the staff.

"I'm very excited," he said. "Even when I first went there and first talked to coach Meyer, I felt like with the staff, it was home all over again. I felt like it was comfortable place and I had to join the family there."

Hooker plays quarterback and safety for New Castle. He was being recruited by schools for a variety of positions, from receiver to cornerback to safety. According to his coach, Joe Cowart, the Buckeyes recruited Hooker to play in the secondary, with cornerback being the first option.

"I don't really know (where he will play)," Hooker said. "Regardless of that, I'm still going to go there and I'm still going to go there and do what I've got to do."
