Jameis Winston Named Starting Quarterback

Jimbo Fisher has announced highly acclaimed redshirt freshman Jameis Winston as the starting quarterback for Florida State's first game against Pitt.

Former five-star recruit and one of the most hyped freshmen in Florida State history Jameis Winston was named the Seminoles' starting quarterback on Friday, beating out Jacob Coker in a long and very close quarterback competition.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher revealed his choice to the media after practice on Friday, confirming that he had met with each quarterback individually to give them the news early in the day before announcing the decision to the team before practice.

Contrary to many media reports and fan opinion, this was a very close competition, and there was very little separation between the two players throughout camp. In the end, Winston's slightly quicker decision-making (though he has had some trouble diagnosing the blitz) and dynamic feet seem to have carried the day.

Fisher said this battle was "one of the toughest decisions I've had to go through," and all indications from inside the Florida State camp are that this is not coach-speak.

The competition was close enough that Florida State fans should not be surprised if Coker gets some meaningful snaps against Pittsburgh. Fisher has been known to do this in the past with close quarterback competitions, and this one went down to the wire.
