Week One: Baylor Commits in Action

With the Texas high school football season kicking off this weekend, Scout offers a look at some of the top in-state match ups featuring Baylor commits...

Houston (Tex.) Lamar @ Houston (Tex.) Klein Forest - Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm

The Redskins made it to the state championship game last season, and with six athletes holding Division-I offers and underclassmen emerges, Lamar is currently ranked #17 in the FOX Sports/Scout.com Top 50).

Baylor commit Ira Lewis is an anchor on the defensive line, but the defense also features two defensive backs with an offer from the Bears: safety John Bonney and cornerback John Plattenburg, who each hold well over twenty offers. Also keep an eye on 2015 corner Holton Hill, who impressed in 7on7 over the summer.

Note: I will be on site covering this game and will be posting updates to twitter.

Abilene (Tex.) Cooper @ Wichita Falls (Tex.) Rider- Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm

Abilene Cooper finished the 2012 season 9-3 and have returned some key playmakers, including defensive back Cordell Dorsey (6-2, 205), who committed to Baylor over the summer.

The Cooper Cougars were busy on the 7on7 front this summer and Dorsey definitely impressed, showing off his aggression on the field and his playmaking skills in general. The game also features another Big 12 commit in athlete Lorenzo Joe, who quarterbacks the team.

Cibolo (Tex.) Steele @ San Antonio (Tex.) Madison - Friday, August 30th at 7:30 pm

One of the most recent "big" gets for the Bears came in the form of 6-foot-6, 240-pound defensive lineman Josh Malin, who committed to Baylor in mid-July. Malin and the Knights will face a very talented Madison team, which features two other future Big 12 players: Kansas State defensive line commit C.J. Reese and Texas Tech receiver commit Byron Daniels. This match up will be one of the state's best this weekend.

Salado (Tex.) @ Rockdale (Tex.) - Friday, August 30th at 7:30 pm

Rockdale will host a Salado team that finished last season at 5-6. Baylor commits are on both sides of the ball for the Tigers: offensive lineman Josh Pelzel (6-6, 320) and linebacker James David (6-2, 225).

Another player to keep an eye on in this match up is 2015 athlete Dailynn Ramey; head coach Jeff Miller told Scout's Greg Powers this summer that Ramey could be the next "real deal".

Paris (Tex.) @ Mt. Pleasant (Tex.) - Friday, August 30th at 7:30 pm

Paris and Mt. Pleasant will again face off in week one of the season, and wide receiver Kd Cannon and the Tigers are hoping for a similar outcome, as they defeated the Wildcats 57-27 in 2012.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Cannon committed to Baylor in August, giving the Bears their third commitment from a four-star athlete (#6-ranked receiver nationally.)

Round Rock (Tex.) @ Temple (Tex.) - Friday, August 30th at 7:30 pm

Temple 2015 quarterback Chad President is the one to watch in this match up. Though the 6-foot-3, 190-pounder did hit the 7on7 circuit this summer, racking up over thirty points a game during the state championship tournament, it will be the first time that the quarterback will play in full pads as a Baylor commit. Another Temple prospect to keep an eye on is safety D'artagnan Seay, who was a force on defense for the team this summer.

The Wildcats will be facing a very good Round Rock team, which features offensive lineman Robert Castaneda, a Texas Tech commit, and receiver Keyon Dilosa, who has received some interest from the Bears.
