Phillips excited for season

Miami Central (Fla.) receiver Da'Vante Philips knows his team has what it takes to win another state title. The 2015 Florida commitment is one of two Gators on a team with commitments to four different Florida schools. Plenty of representing their teams goes on in that locker room.

In its preseason game, Miami Central rolled over Dwyer 44-13, and that was with 205-yards in penalties. This team is a top contender for state champion this year, and Da'Vante Phillips will be a big part of that. The junior receiver was one of three in the game, and the one was a huge 70-yard catch for a touchdown.

The Florida commitment threw up the Gator chomp after the catch. Fellow Gator commitment Dalvin Cook and he represent the Gators well on a team full of athletes committed elsewhere.

"Me and Dalvin have a handshake, and we Gator chomp at the end twice," Phillips said.

"It's fun, just knowing you're going to have somebody that's going to the same school as you. When we get in the endzone, we just throw up that Gator chomp, it's Gator Nation."

In addition to the two Florida commitments, Miami Central has two athletes committed to Miami, two to South Florida, and one to Florida State.

"We don't really talk a lot of trash, the only stuff you'll see is us having different hats on, everybody throws up their different signs," Phillips said.

"Everybody's working on recruiting everybody."

Phillips said everybody seems solid to their commitments right now, but that doesn't stop them all from talking to each other about it. He's not sure about any visits he make take this fall, most likely he'll be at the Florida at Miami game. The four-star receiver is working on achieving his goals for his junior season.

"Just compete, stay humble, and win."
