Week One: OSU Commits in Action

With the Texas high school football season kicking off this weekend, Scout offers a look at some of the top match ups featuring Oklahoma State commits from Texas...

Houston (Tex.) Clear Lake @ Deer Park (Tex.) - Friday, August 30th at 7:30 pm

Though Clear Lake finished 2012 3-7, only going 1-5 in district play, the Falcons returned a few talented players, including offensive tackle Matthew Mucha (6-6, 255), who committed to Oklahoma State over the summer. Mucha is joined on the line by another future Big 12 athlete, offensive guard Blake Blackmar (6-5, 315) who is committed to Baylor. The Falcolns also have a 2015 athlete who has landed a spot on the Scout 300: tight end Jordan Davis, an early Texas A&M commit.

Deer Park, whose quarterback Connor Means is committed to North Texas, won this contest 29-6 last season, but finished the year only going 6-6.

Spring (Tex.) Klein Oak @ Houston (Tex.) Langham Creek - Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm

Klein Oak could be a force to be reckoned with this fall, as the Panthers' team features some serious talent, including recent Oklahoma State linebacker commit Josh Mabin (6-2, 219). Currently, three other players are committed to Division-I programs: defensive end Javon Shelley, who is headed to Houston, quarterback Jordan Davis, a Louisiana commit, and running back Larenzo Stewart, who committed to Nebraska over the summer.

Houston (Tex.) Taylor @ Bellaire (Tex.) - Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm

Taylor's team has a four-star Oklahoma State commit on either side of the ball in 6-foot-3, 185-pound receiver Keenen Brown and 5-foot-9, 178-pound corner Chris Hardeman; both athletes committed to the Cowboys earlier this month and were recently named to the preseason All-Great Houston team. Two other Lions to keep an eye on both hold Division-I offers: receiver Romello Brooker and safety Josh Kalu.

There are future college athletes on both teams, however, as Baylor offensive guard commit Devonte Jones and Texas State linebacker commit Brelynd Goods both play for Bellaire.

Missouri City (Tex.) Fort Bend Hightower @ Houston (Tex.) Eisenhower - Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm

Eisenhower has a future Big-12 athlete leading both sides of the ball in Oklahoma State cornerback commit Trey Roberts (6-1, 190) and running back Donald Catalon (5-11, 195), who is headed to Texas.

The Eagles lost this match up 21-12 in 2012, and though they face a Fort Bend Hightower team that went 5-5 last fall, the Hurricanes have a roster that features four Houston commits in Matthew Adams, Roosevelt Appleton, Khalil Williams, and Joeal Williams.

Houston (Tex.) Madison @ Pearland (Tex.) - Friday, August 30th at 7:00 pm

Though Madison has put out a number of top prospect to the college level in previous seasons, the most highly touted prospects in this year's match up are on Pearland's roster.

Three-star outside linebacker Justin Phillips, who was recently named to the preseason All-Greater Houston team, is a leader on defense. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder was the Cowboys first commit in the 2014 class.

On offense, the Oilers have 6-foot-5, 250-pound offensive lineman Ryan Griswold, a Boise State commit. Keep an eye on defensive end Avery Jordan; at 6-foot-6, 240-pounds, he could garner some offers this fall.
