Onwenu hearing from Spartans early

Cass Tech sophomore offensive lineman visited East Lansing in August and liked what he saw in his first sports-focused visit.

Cass Tech sophomore offensive linemen Michael Onwenu visited Michigan State on August 7 with a group of his teammates.

It was his first visit for football, but he had been to East Lansing before.

"It was my first time visiting for sports," he said," but my sister goes to Michigan State."

Onwenu, who said his sister is a sophomore, has a family divided when it comes to the in-state rivalry.

"Some of us go to Michigan, some of us go to Michigan State," he said. "My family, it's like a rivalry."

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound sophomore said when he looks at Michigan State, he likes what he sees.

"I look at a good football team," he said. "When I was in their weight room, I liked how their weight room was and how the books are set up for how they go through plays after practices and everything."

He said he enjoyed the visit for ‘Spartan Day' and what the Spartans showed during practice.

"I really had liked the practices and everything," he said. "It was like our practices. If I go there, it would be like I've been doing this for a long time and I know what to do."

Onwenu plays offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Technicians.

He has been hearing from Michigan and Ohio State, as well as Tennessee and Notre Dame.
