Masek impressed with atmosphere at MSU

East Grand Rapids junior recaps his visit to East Lansing last week; talks fall visits he hopes to make.

East Grand Rapids junior linebacker Carter Masek made a pair of visits to East Lansing in August, with the latest coming for the Spartans' game against Western Michigan.

"It was awesome," he said. "It was a great atmosphere. It was cool to talk to the coaches and be on the field before the game. The game was great and it was just overall a great time."

The student section in particular left an impression with Masek.

"The student section was going crazy and all the fans there," he said. "It's an awesome feeling to experience what it's like to be on the field for a Big Ten-caliber game."

Masek, who worked out with Curtis Blackwell at MaxEx, said he has been in touch with him lately.

"I'm talking to Coach Blackwell," Masek said. "I was going to speak with Coach Tressel, but he had to go to something after the game so I wasn't able to talk to him."

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound middle linebacker has an early offer from Western Michigan and has some visits lined up in the near future.

"Indiana this weekend," he said. "I hope to get to Northwestern, Minnesota, Toledo, Western Michigan and Central Michigan."

As for his high school season, Masek said he is focused on being the leader of the East Grand Rapids defense.

"Being more of a quarterback of the defense," he said. "I do a pretty good job of it, but just making sure everything is perfectly set up and perfectly executed."

The Pioneers opened the season with a 24-7 win against Grand Rapids Catholic Central and play East Kentwood on Friday.
