Weekend Preview: Ranked CenTex/Houston Teams

Scout presents a closer look at the weekend's match-ups featuring FOX Sports Top 50 high school teams from the Houston and Central Texas area...

Thursday: #18 Katy (Texas) at Houston (Texas) Alief Taylor at 7:00 p.m.

One of the best match ups in the area sees two undefeated teams vying for their second win of the season. The Katy Tigers kicked off their season with a 41-3 win over Klein (Texas), and will face a Lions' team that defeated Bellaire 22-9 in week one.

Katy is a traditional Texas powerhouse and the roster contains a number of prospects with Division-I offers, including three-star linebacker Jake Blomstrom (Rice offer), tight end Logan Lister (Rutgers commit), tight end Sloan Spiller (UTEP commit), and three-star defensive lineman Tim Wilkerson (Washington State, Texas State, and Toledo offers). 2015 running back Rodney Anderson, a four-star prospect, has committed to Texas A&M. Anderson rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns in week one.

Taylor has its own share of talent, including a pair of four-star Oklahoma State commits: defensive back Chris Hardeman and ride receiver Keenen Brown. Three-star safety Josh Kalu holds offers from programs including Colorado, Duke, Houston, Nebraska, SMU, and Washington State, and receiver Romelio Brooker has been offered by the likes of Houston, ULM, New Mexico, Rice, Texas State, and UTSA.

Friday: Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Elkins at #16 Houston (Texas) Lamar at 7:00 p.m.

Lamar shutout Klein Forest in week one with a 29-0 victory and all signs point to the team continuing on a streak of wins. Though quarterback Darrell Colbert showed off more of his run game than passing, he managed to rack up 77 yards for a touchdown. 2015 prospect Ronnie Wesley, who holds an SMU offer, was the offensive playmaker of the night, accounting for the Redskins other three touchdowns.

Defensively, Lamar has one of the country's top DB duos in four-star defensive backs John Plattenburg and John Bonney, who each hold a number of offers from around the country.

Baylor defensive line commit Ira Lewis had some big tackles at pivotal moments, and 2015 defensive back Holton Hill also made a case for himself.

Elkins is coming off of a 55-13 win over Dayton (Texas).

Friday: #44 Leander (Texas) Cedar Park at Abilene (Texas) Cooper at 7:30 p.m.

Cooper lost their week one game versus Wichita Falls (Texas) Rider by just three points, so the Cougars will come out fighting versus Cedar Park, FOX Sports #44-ranked team.

This game has Division-I commits all over the field. Cooper is quarterbacked by Lorenzo Joe; while the 6-foot-2.5, 195-pound athlete has committed to Texas as a receiver, he was one of the best quarterbacks Scout saw in 7on7 over the summer. The team also features receiver Trey Dye, a BYU commit, and three-star defensive back Cordell Dorsey, a future Baylor Bear.

Cedar Park is coming off of a 43-31 victory over Austin Westlake and will be a tough opponent for Cooper on Friday. Though quarterback Nate Grimm had received just a little college interest over the summer, with a sole offer from Sam Houston State, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound signal-caller had many people talking after he threw for 215 yards and rushed for an additional 130-yards last weekend.
