Midwest: Scout on the Town, National Recap

We were at a handful of games in the Midwest this past weekend in Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio.

Detroit (Mich.) King vs Detroit (Mich.) Mumford

Iowa commit Jalen Embry had a big game for the Crusaders. The senior cornerback had two interceptions and a touchdown catch. He's a good football player with good ball skills, instincts and a knack for making big plays. He's not the biggest guy around, he may not be the fastest guy around, but he just knows how to play the game. He should end up being a good one for the Hawkeyes. Pittsburgh commit Avonte Maddox did not have any of his customary big plays on offense, but showed toughness in grinding out yardage offensively. He made several guys miss and was one tackler away from breaking big runs plays several times. As a cornerback, he had an excellent game. He has good hips, great closing speed and his ball skills allowed him to break up several passes against bigger receivers. Junior linebacker Tyriq Thompson has gotten bigger and is a physical kid with good instincts, smarts, and is a terror on the blitz. He also made a couple nice plays in coverage. Young defensive backs Dontre Boyd and Jesse Johnson are ones to watch. Mumford has several nice prospects including offensive tackle Antoine Bacon, wide receiver Carl Miller and linebacker James Miller. Junior Deshawn Foster made a lot of plays at wide receiver as well.

Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech vs East English Village Prep (Mich.)
Cass played tough on defense. Michigan State commit Deon Drake is back from injury and looked fast and recovered from his injury. Recent Buffalo commit William White is physical and delivered several violent collisions. Michigan State junior commit Jayru Campbell, as his been his M.O. over his career, just found a way to win. He still has work to do mechanically, but he took good care of the football and got the ball in the hands of playmakers. Running back Mike Weber had a good game. He did not break the big plays he has had all season, but showed his quickness and he was tough, grinding out yardage when it wasn't there. Freshman wide receiver Donovan Peoples Jones made a big debut, catching a deep ball along the sideline late in the game. He's the next big time prospect from the school. East English has an outstanding freshman as well in offensive tackle Emani Mason who has a chance to be a major prospect. Sophomore receiver Armani Posey s a great athlete, but an injury forced him to play quarterback for much of the night.

Wyoming (Ohio) vs. Mariemont (Ohio)

This game was one sided early as Wyoming posted 14 points in the first quarter before rolling behind senior quarterback Will Marty who passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns to go with a 113 yard one touchdown rushing performance. Mariemont senior lineman Jon Bezney made his college decision by pledging to Yale over offers from Wisconsin and Vanderbilt.

Friday: Centerville (Ohio) vs. Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne
Junior quarterback D'Mitrik Trice posted 390 yards passing with four touchdowns as Wayne defeated Centerville 42-35 in a close hard fought battle that was decided with 1:49 left in the game. Senior receiver Tristan Davis showed why he's one of the most underrated prospects in Ohio with two touchdown and 163 yards receiving on the night. Freshman running back Matt Wilcox scored three touchdowns including the game winning score.

Westerville South vs. Westerville Central

Central rolled to an easy 54-35 win over arch-rival South in Ohio action. South wide receiver/defensive back Amu Damary was impressive in defeat and he caught everything throw his way. South junior offensive tackle Rob Dowdy showed why he has offers from the Big Ten and SEC, and he was especially good in pass protection. Kentucky commit Nick Richardson led the way for Central's punishing ground game, as the senior offensive tackle was a road grader throughout the game. Junior defensive tackle Ben Cooper picked up an offer from Kentucky recently, and he is a 2015 prospect of note.

Shaker Heights (Ohio)vs. Elyria (Ohio)
Shaker Heights lost a tough one 14-6 on a muddy field that hampered the quality of play. For Shaker, Tennessee commit Joseph Henderson did what he could, but Elyria ran away from him most of the night and employed a quick passing game to keep the defensive end at bay. Offensive tackle Ja'Merez Bowen played well, showing the skills that have earned him several BCS offers. Wide receiver Odell Spencer is committed to Bowling Green, but recently added an offer from Cincinnati.

Cleveland St. Ignatius vs. Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward
In what has to be considered an upset, legendary head coach Chuck Kyle led his St. Ignatius squad to a hard fought 23-17 win over St. Edward. Linebacker/safety Dameon Willis turned in an amazing performance and he was all over the field defensively. Indiana is getting a good one in Willis. Offensive tackle Jimmy Byrne showed the skills that have him one of the top offensive linemen in the Midwest, and the Notre Dame commit was excellent both in run blocking and pass protection. For St. Edward, Michigan commit Shaun Crawford continues to show the electric skills that have him ranked as one of the top 2015 prospects in-state. He had a kick return of 80 yards for a touchdown. Two-way performer David Dowell continues to get better and add BCS offers. He could play either wide receiver or defensive back at the next level.

Frankfurt (Ill.) Lincoln-Way East vs Bolingbrook (Ill.)

Bolingbrook's 2013 season is going an awful lot like the 2011 season where the team captured the Illinois 8A state title. So far on the season, the Raiders are 8-0 after taking down a tough Lincoln-Way East team 12-3. It was truly a battle of two staunch defenses, and most of the points in the whole game weren't put up until the fourth quarter. Lincoln-Way East is 6-2 on the season and had a good night from Illinois commit and U.S. Army All-American offensive lineman Nick Allegretti. Bolingbrook was led by the defense, including four-star defensive back Parrker Westphal, who has recently taken visits to Michigan State and Vanderbilt, and even punted for the Raiders. They also feature junior defensive end Micah Dew-Treadway and sophomore linebacker Tuf Borland, who nabbed two interceptions on the night.

Powell (Ohio) Olentangy Liberty vs. Hilliard (Ohio) Davidson

Olentangy Liberty (Ohio) struck first against Hilliard Davidson (Ohio) after a Daryian Davies 10 yard touchdown run seven minutes into the game. However, after that, Olentangy Liberty struggled getting their offense going. While Hilliard Davidson was scoreless in the first half, they returned after half time firing. Junior Markus Bailey ran for two touchdowns while Pittsburgh commit Phillipie Motley also had a touchdown of his own. Senior D.D. Clark added a touchdown with two minutes left in the game to solidify the 28-7 win for Hilliard Davidson to stay undefeated.
