Scout Recaps Week Thirteen in Kansas City
Kansas In the Class 5A State Semifinal, Blue Valley took on Eastern Kansas League foe Blue Valley West. The Tigers were eying their second trip to the State Championship Game under head coach Eric Driskell, while Scott Wright's West looked to return to the title game for the first time since 2007. In a matchup of fierce rivals, Blue Valley quarterback Logan Brettell had his best game of the year, completing 63% of his passes and throwing for five touchdowns, with 287 yards of total offense. Jaguars QB Ryan Ralston was again the focal point for West, with 285 total yards and four TDs. The key was the Tigers ability to possess the football, holding the football for over 36 minutes, and picking up 23 first downs. Blue Valley reaches the title game for the fourth time in ten years, downing the Jaguars 38-33. The Tigers will face Salina South for the second time this season next Saturday in the Class 5A State Championship Game in Emporia. In Class 6A, perennial power Olathe North faced a one-loss Shawnee Mission East squad on the verge of playing in the State Championship Game for the first time in school history. The Eagles, with eight titles in the last 17 years, were trying to make it to state for the first time since Gene Wier returned to lead the program last year. Running back Venus Triplett led the way for North, with 134 rushing yards and three TDs on the night. The Lancers rolled up 421 yards of total offense on the Eagles' defense, with over 300 yards on the ground. RB Luke Taylor was the man for SME, with 115 yards and two scores. Head coach Dustin Delaney reaches the title game in his first year with the Lancers, as East takes down Olathe North for the second time this season, 37-27. SME will take on Derby in the Class 6A State Championship Game in Topeka next Saturday. Missouri In Missouri's Class 5, Kearney traveled to Lee's Summit West with a trip to the State Championship Game on the line. Simone Award candidate Brock Broughton again carried the load for the Bulldogs, with 151 all-purpose yards, but he only reached the end zone once Friday night. Broughton accounted for almost half of Kearney's offensive output, but it wasn't enough against the Titans. West QB Thomas Ganaden was superb, completing nearly 78% of his passes for 308 yards and three TDs. Nebraska commit Monte Harrison caught seven of those passes for 148 yards and two scores, including a 61-yard sprint to the end zone in the first quarter. Junior receiver Brenner Clemons had 131 yards of total offense for the Titans and scoring three TDs as Lee's Summit West rolls, 42-14. The Titans will face Parkway Central next Saturday in the Class 5 State Championship Game in St. Louis. Blue Springs entered Friday night's matchup with Eureka on a winning streak dating back to September of 2012. With a goal of winning back-to-back Class 6 State Championships, all that stood in the Wildcats way was an 11-1 squad clad in the same colors and with the same mascot. Kelly Donahoe's squad showed no signs of overlooking Eureka, as Blue Springs piled up 486 yards of total offense. Junior QB Ian Brown played his best game of the year, completing nearly 62% of his passes for 315 yards and five TDs. Brown found WR Darrius Shepherd six times for 121 yards and two scores. Kansas State commit Dalvin Warmack was almost unstoppable, rolling up 241 all-purpose yards and two TDs, further cementing his status as the frontrunner for the Simone Award. Blue Springs overwhelms Eureka, 42-14, and will take on Columbia Rock Bridge Friday night in the Class 6 State Championship Game in St. Louis.
