Akron (OH) St. Vincent-St. Mary linebacker Dante Booker and his teammates won a coveted second consecutive state championship on Thursday night. The four-star linebacker spearheaded a defensive attack that secured a defensive shutout against Trotwood-Madison.
The Irish went through the regular season and postseason unscathed and Booker played a major role in the effort.
"Not too many people get an opportunity to win a state championship so I'm pretty blessed to have won two," said Booker. "It's an unbelievable feeling. I can't explain it. We didn't talk about the satiate title all year until the week of. It doesn't get any better than this."
Booker went in-depth on the defense's key performance in preserving the shutout.
"That's what we do," he stated. "We play defense at St. Vincent-St. Mary. We heard throughout the season how many points we'd give up to the top offenses in the playoffs. We decided that wasn't going to happen and we set out to prove it."
"They (Trotwood-Madison) were a good team and it's saying something for us to shut them out," he continued. "We're a good team and we like to focus on ourselves more than the competition."
The two-time state champion linebacker and Ohio State commit discussed how he and his teammates dealt with the pressure of meeting expectations this season.
"There wasn't any pressure for us because of the hard work and dedication we have to the game," Booker explained. "We work hard so the pressure goes away and we expect to go out and do what we have to and what we have been coached."
Booker will join his teammate Parris Campbell in taking an official visit to Ohio State during January.
