Semper Fi: Xavier Burke

GARDEN GROVE, Calif – Nearly a year and a half ago, Xavier Burke committed to Virginia Tech. This week while in California for the Semper Fi All-American Bowl, the Lawrenceville (Va.) Brunswick Academy tight end spoke with Scout.com about his decision to become a Sooner, future and more.

Three-star tight end Xavier Burke "I'm tremendously blessed," said the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Burke. "It's my first time coming to California and I'm looking forward to having a great time. And learning some more football and becoming a better player."

Burke committed to Virginia Tech before the start of his junior season.

"Virginia Tech just felt like home," he said. "With the new offensive coordinator Scott Loeffler, he uses the tight end a whole lot.

The Hokies' coaching staff played huge role in his decision.

"All the coaches are great guys," he said. "Also, having the opportunity to play for coach (Frank) Beamer just feels great.

"Playing for a coach of his stature, who has gone to 21 straight bowls – I'm just thankful that I'm committed to Virginia Tech and have the opportunity to play for him."

Before he moves on to the next chapter of his football career, Burke is looking forward to his last high school football game tomorrow.

"I just want to see where I'm at among the top players in the country," he said. "I want to see what I need to work on and improve on before I go to the next level."

Burke is the 59th-ranked tight end in the 2014 class.
