While no longer rivals on the playing field, the Aggies and Longhorns still do battle in the living rooms of the top high school talent in the lone star state. Back in March, Mack Brown and Kevin Sumlin pitched one of the top outside linebacker prospects in the state, Cy-Falls product Otaro Alaka. At the time, the 6-foot-3, 210-pound athlete committed to the Longhorns.
Nine months later, Texas replaced Brown with Charlie Strong, and the coaching change caused Alaka to open up his recruitment and take another look at Texas A&M.
After an official visit to College Station and dueling in-home visits by the two head coaches last week, the four-star linebacker sent out a tweet Sunday afternoon to announce his intentions.
"I'd like to thank Coach Strong and UT for the offer," said Alaka. "But I've decided to decommit from the University of Texas and commit to Texas A&M."
Ranked the No. 15 outside linebacker by Scout.com, Alaka fills one of the few needs remaining the A&M's highly-rated 2014 class. With the academic struggles and subsequent loss of long-time linebacker pledge Hoza Scott, the Aggies were in need of a quality linebacker commit and Alaka filled the void.
