Morgan Richey to Walk-On at UW

Morgan Richey, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive lineman from Bellevue, verbally committed to play football for Yale two weeks ago, but visits to Washington changed his mind. Thursday Richey met with Chris Petersen, Chris Strausser and Bob Gregory and told the new Washington coaches that he wanted to take them up on an offer to come to Montlake as a preferred walk-on.

"They were fired up," Richey told Dawgman.com shortly after making his announcement public via his personal Twitter account. "The first thing coach Strausser said was that they wanted me to not just come in, but to come in and compete against their scholarship guys. It definitely felt sincere."

Richey had committed to the Bulldogs on January 16th, but then a meeting with Bob Gregory turned his head. "I went on a visit to Yale and enjoyed it, but I wasn't totally sure how I was going to deal with being on the east coast for the next four years," he said. "But then coach Gregory told me that he wanted me to come to Washington and compete as a walk-on, and that gave me something to think about.

"Then (Oregon) coach (Steve) Greatwood basically said the same thing and that they wanted me to walk on and be a part of their program.

"But the opportunity to stay at home and play and get a great education was something I couldn't pass up. And the coaches, the new coaches got me really excited about it."

Richey is excited about the opportunity to earn a scholarship at UW. "It's definitely something to fight for," he said.

With less than a week to go until signing day, would Richey entertain scholarship offers at this point in the process? "I guess we'll cross that bridge, but right now I'm pretty fired up and happy with my decision to go to Washington," he said.

Richey played inside and outside for the Wolverines last year, and has played a part in three Class A state titles. The Huskies are recruiting him as an interior lineman with the option of moving outside if it works out.
