Elijah Barnwell is finishing his freshman year at Piscataway (N.J.) High, and just picked up his first offer when Rutgers extended one, but the get-to-know phase already passed.

"I've been at Rutgers ever since my brother was a freshman (in high school) and they were recruiting him," Elijah Barnwell said. "I like Rutgers a lot. I know all the coaches, and I like them. It's very cool."

Barnwell is being recruited as an athlete, mainly because it remains to be seen how big he gets. He is plays running back, safety and outside linebacker.

"That's what I want to play in college, one of those three positions," said Barnwell, who is also hearing from Penn State, Boston College, Syracuse and Massachusetts.

Barnwell actually received the offer last month, and it came as a bit of a surprise when word of it filtered own to him.

"They called me head coach, Dan Higgins, and they told him they wanted to offer me," he said. "Then, he told me dad. That's how I found out about it.

"I was very excited when I found out about it, and it just pushes me to work harder whenever I think about it. It's a great achievement for someone my age, so I just use it as motivation."
