2016 Intro: Carter Coughlin

Eden Prairie (Minn.) class of 2016 linebacker-defensive end Carter Coughlin is a young prospect to know in the Midwest. He is hearing from several BCS programs and talks about his early recruitment and more here.

Eden Prairie is a program that always seems to have Division-1 talent on its roster. One coming up the ranks who made an impact as a sophomore for last year's undefeated Eagles team was Carter Coughlin, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound hybrid linebacker-defensive end.

"Last year, honestly it was a huge change for me," he said. "In the beginning of the season, I was starting out playing linebacker and there were two seniors playing linebacker ahead of me. I was competing for that spot and I blew out my ankle at the end of pre-fall. When I recovered, the coaches decided the biggest need for our team was speed on the outside rushing in as a defensive end, so I moved to end a quarter of the way in."

This season, Coughlin will move back to linebacker, but his frame and versatility should allow colleges to project him to either position. His play last season has already caught the eye of several programs.

"I've gotten interest from Minnesota, Michigan State and Pittsburgh," he said. I attended Minnesota's spring practice this last Tuesday."

That visit was the start of his process with the Gophers, and given their proximity, that relationship is likely to build over the next few years.

"It was really great. With Coach Miller leaving the linebackers... I talked to him last summer, but I didn't know the new linebackers coach. From what I saw, he's a really great guy and Coach Kill is a funny awesome dude. I talked to the recruiting coordinator for most of practice, then Coach Kill and the linebackers coach talked to me at the end and they said they're looking forward to going through the process with me."

In June, Coughlin will hope to push himself further onto the radar when he attends a handful of college camps.

"So far I'm attending Pitt, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan State and it's a possibility I might try Florida State and Ole Miss. Michigan sent me a flyer for their camp so there is also a big chance I will attend that too."
