"I wasn't expecting it, but I was excited when it happened," said the 6-foot-4, 270-pound Campell. "It's a good school and it felt great getting an offer from the national champions.
"(Defensive ends) coach (Sal) Sunseri is recruiting me. I like him. He's a straight-up guy and he's going to tell you the truth."
The last school he visited was Maryland.
"I went Maryland for their spring football game," Campbell said. "I've been to Maryland a few times and it's close to home. My mom would be able to come to every game and it's also a good school.
"The atmosphere and fans are also great. And they have a great criminal justice program, which is what I want to major in.
"I've developed a great relationship with coach (Chad) Wilt, who coaches the defensive line and (outside linebackers) coach (Lyndon) Johnson. They're good guys and they're going coach you hard. They're also honest."
In regards to upcoming visits, Campell plans to head to Notre Dame, Alabama, Ohio State, Miami, Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia.
Campbell is looking forward to his junior season.
"Last year, I transferred and there was a lot I needed to learn," he said. "So this year, I feel like I've been able to learn our entire defensive system and I'm more confident.
"I also want to break Da'Shawn Hand's sack record, which is 31. Team-wise, we have a great team, so we want to make a playoff run and win a state championship."
Campbell claims no favorites at this time.
Update: Campbell was offered by Minnesota yesterday.
