Taylor Recaps MSU Visit

SpartanDigest.com caught up with defensive line target Elijah Taylor about his recent overnight visit with the Spartans.

The past weekend allowed Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller defensive lineman Elijah Taylor a chance to learn more about Michigan State and to catch up with some former teammates.

"It started off at my family I have up in Perrysburg, Ohio," said Taylor. "They are close to Michigan State so around eight we drove up to campus and I got a chance to see the facilities again and talk with Coach (Harlon) Barnett, Coach (Ron) Burton and Coach (Mark) Dantonio.

"There were a lot of things going on, so I didn't get to spend a lot of time with them, but I got to spend a good amount of time with them learning more about the future at Michigan State and how things are going.

"I spoke with Coach Barnett and we just talked about how things are going in Cincinnati and how things are going at Michigan State. It got more in-depth with Coach Burton as we talked the longest. We talked position wise and how big I'm to get and stuff. We also talked about the defense and about family as we try to get to know each other better.

"I didn't really get to talk with Coach Dantonio that much but we did get to talk about my interest level and everything about Michigan State. We also talked about how he feels about the season and he also showed me his ring."

Following the Spartans spring game Taylor got a look at the Spartans future while also connecting with his past and learning more about how he'd fit in the program.

"After watching the spring game I got a chance to check out the new locker rooms and then headed to see Monty (Madaris), Marcus (Rush) and Shane (Jones)," he continued. "Seeing them is a good thing and is helping me a lot as they are telling me how they feel about the school and stuff. I also stayed overnight with Shane.

"The fact we have all these Moeller players going to Michigan State shows a lot in many ways. But I'm just trying to make sure it's the right fit for me."

While getting firsthand accounts from others, Taylor knows there is more to choosing a program than just it having former teammates.

"It kind of helps," he said. "But it's not really a big difference because the relationship is not just with the players, but also with the coaches. I feel I've been making more relationships with the coaches instead of the players. It still helps out a lot and the fact they are there shows something."

Taylor didn't make the trip alone and is getting solid feedback from his parents about all programs of interest.

"My dad and mom both went on the trip and they said they really enjoyed it a lot," he said. "Every time they go up there they say they really enjoy it and they say they love Coach Barnett a lot and feel he's a great guy.

"They really do like Michigan State and the fact they offered me earlier than other schools and the fact they have a good tradition with Moeller people coming out of there."

While Taylor was looking to make a decision at some point in June, a new offer may have slowed him down in making his choice in a couple of months as Florida State recently offered.

SpartanDigest.com will continue to check with Taylor about where the Spartans stand in the race for his commitment.
