First To Commit?

Southern Miss is still looking for that first commitment of the class of 2015. Here are several names to watch who could be the ones to break through for the Eagles.

Its mid-May, and the Eagles are without their first commitment for the class of 2015.

Is there reason for concern?

Talk to me again in mid-July, and if the Eagles are still in the same boat then it will be time. This Golden Eagle staff knows how to recruit, and the coaches are playing it smart and making sure any commitments they pick up now will be ones that are not going to waiver.

After losing 4 on signing day last season, its a wise approach.

This Eagle's staff is positioning themselves to bring in a nice class for 2015, and though there aren't any on the commitment list yet, the number of talented prospects they are in good shape with is very encouraging.

Here are 10 to watch closely, any of whom could be the first to commit...

-Jarek Taylor, DB, Bob Jones High School (AL)- Taylor is up to 6 offers now, but tells me that Southern Miss is at the top of his list, simply because they are showing him the most love right now. Taylor said he talks with the coaching staff every day, and the Eagles and Cal are his top two choices right now.

-Javahn Fergurson, LB/DE, (LA)- Things are up in the air a bit with Fergurson's high school status, with reports that he is transferring schools. Regardless, he maintains that Southern Miss is his "dream school" and he said he talks to the coaches every day, multiple times a day. He'll take some visits but its clear the Eagles have the lead for him right now.

-Cortez Sisco, LB, Southaven (MS)- Sisco is around the double digit range in offers, but had a terrific meeting with Coach Monken that had him come out and say Southern Miss was his leader. Sisco is a great prospect that the Eagles really hope to keep in south Mississippi.

-Troy Thingstad, DT, St. Paul's HS, Mobile (AL)- Thingstad took a visit to Southern Miss at junior day, then made a return trip during the spring game. He's loving what the coaches are telling him about his future role there, and the closeness to Mobile has him excited too. The Eagles still have work to do but this is a guy that they are in great shape with right now.

-Tyler Bell, RB, Faith Academy, Mobile (AL)- Bell is a talented RB who the Eagles were the first to offer. Back when the Golden Eagle staff and Coach Monken first got to Hattiesburg, they identified him as a player they wanted in the future. Hoping to continue to establish a pipeline to Mobile, this would be a very important commitment for the Eagles.

-Joe Smith, S, Peachtree Ridge HS, Suwanee (GA)- The Eagles have found a school they also hope to be a pipeline, Peachtree Ridge in GA. Already with two from there in the class of 2014, they might have another one in talented safety Joe Smith. After a visit to Southern Miss at Junior Day, the staff convinced Smith and a few of his teammates that Hattiesburg was where he needed to continue his career. The Eagles lead, can they hold on?

-Jordan Wright, RB, Pearl (MS)- Wright has been one we've pointed to throughout the recruiting process for this class. The talented RB continues to see the Eagles show him a lot of love, and he's quite interested as well. More schools will move on Wright and it will certainly be a fight to the finish, but the relationships and early offer tilt the scales in the Eagle's favor.

-Omar Bayless, WR, Laurel (MS) -The local 6'2 receiver picked up his first offer from the near by Eagles, who have identified another target they want to keep close to home. The first offer and closeness in proximity have the Eagles sitting in a nice position for Bayless, who is a name certain to get a lot more looks as the summer goes along.

-Jaleen Thomas, RB, Northview HS, Dothan (AL)- Thomas is a guy we haven't talked much about, but things are heating up with him and the Eagles. After picking up a recent offer, Thomas is liking what he's hearing from the Eagles. He plans on taking a visit soon and would relish being the RB target. He also has offers from MSU, Texas State, and Appalachian State.

-Jozie Milton, OL, Silliman Institute, Clinton (LA) -Milton has also been on the Eagle's radar for a long, long time, around the time this staff first arrived in Hattiesburg. Always reaching out to them, Milton has shown he's quite interested. His dad is a Southern Miss alum, so he's always had interest. Now that the staff has offered, things are continuing to heat up. Milton is getting interest from everywhere, so its not going to be without a fight but you have to like the Eagles' chances with him.
