Columbus NFTC: MVPs and The Opening Invites

The Columbus NIKE camp was talented and some of the guys who were expected to be top performers did not disappoint as four committed players took home honors, but there were also some surprises.

Quarterback MVP: Ben Hicks – Waco (Tex.) Midway
Hicks impressed at the Chicago Elite 11 qualifier and once again came to the Midwest and showed his talent. He's a natural passer and the ball comes out of his hand easily and with good velocity. He's a consistent kid. He just has to keep getting bigger and stronger.

Running Back MVP: Andrew Dowell - Lakewood (Ohio) St. Edward
The Northwestern commit was very impressive. He was always well built, but he has gotten even bigger and stronger, but is still moving through drills like he was at a smaller weight. He also catches the ball very well. We think the Wildcats got a very good one here.

Wide Receiver/Tight End MVP: C.J. Conrad – LaGrange (Ohio) Keystone
The Kentucky commit has good size and used that frame to grab passes and MVP honors as well as an invite to The Opening today.

Offensive Line MVP: Michael Onwenu – Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech
Onwenu's success as an O-Lineman came as a bit of a surprise since he was considered more of a defensive prospect, but he had a very strong punch, good technique and won a majority of his one on one reps.

Defensive Line MVP: Jashon Cornell – St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin Derham Hall
This was a very good position group and Cornell earned his way to the honors by winning many of his one on one reps. He's quick off the ball and shows good technique. He earned an invite to The Opening.

Linebacker MVP: Darrin Kirkland – Lawrence Central (Ind.)
The Michigan commit was impressive with his lateral agility. He did well in pass coverage, not something that was necessarily considered his forte coming in. He was invited to The Opening.

Defensive Back MVP: Tyson Smith – Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's
A Michigan State commit, Smith was good in coverage all day and came away with several impressive plays and interceptions. He has good size, is willing to be physical, and we believe the Spartans got another good one at DB.

**In addition to those mentioned above, linebacker Josh Smith was also invited to The Opening.
