NC State junior shortstop Trea Turner has been selected by San Diego with the 13th pick in the first round. Turner was the first shortstop picked in the 2014 First-Year Player (Rule 4) draft.

A three-time All-American, Turner posted a .318 batting average with eight home runs and 24 stolen bases in 2014. A dynamic basestealer, Turner has major upside as a middle infielder prospect.

"Scouts have come around on Turner, now calling him a definite future shortstop that can stick at the position, with an above average arm, true actions and good range helped by his game-changing plus-plus speed," said Scout.com Baseball Analyst Kiley McDaniel. "Turner has turned in some 80 run times in the 60 yard dash and earlier in his career, but some leg injuries has slowed him just a bit to where the 80 times at much more rare, or when he gets out of the box particularly quickly."

According to the assigned pick values, the Padres can offer Turner up to $2,723,300 in guaranteed signing bonus money.
