I have seen a ton of football throughout the Spring and early into the Summer passing league schedule. I wanted to start putting some of it down on paper, so to speak. So here is part one of my series of off-season notes. I will start with some of the bigger schools I have seen thus far.
Mountain Pointe- The defending D1 state champs won't miss a beat, although they do have some spots to be filled, especially on defense. Their D was unreal last year and losing Charlie Trevino and Mitchell Fraboni up front, Wesley Payne and Trey Lauer at linebacker and almost their entire secondary with Jalen Brown, Tim Hernandez and Markell Simmons all moving on to the next level. DT Bruce Hester is a terror up front and LB Austin Cronen mans the middle. So at least they will be solid up the middle of their defense.
Their offensive line looks like one of the best in the state. Nick Carman is a stud, Davis Perrott is an up and comer. Clayton Dry is back at guard and Collin Lambdin is one of the best centers in the state. Look for Hester or Deshaun Felder to fill in the other guard spot.
They are loaded in the backfield. Brandyn Leonard and Paul Lucas are top level performers, who also could see time in the secondary, and transfer Tyreek Cross makes this a three-headed monster; and we all know Norris Vaughan likes to run the football.
The biggest question was at QB, until I saw Garvin Alston. He will be a D1 football player.
Hamilton- Many people think this is the year they could catch Hamilton. To say they lose a ton of players is an understatement. But I think the Huskies have gone into the off-season with a chip on their shoulder. They have performed very well at several passing league tournaments, even beating rival Chandler at UofA's tournament, and passing league is built for the athletes that Chandler has.
Replacing nearly the entire offensive line is going to be the key. Casey Tucker, Trent Moore, Bryce Holland and Marquez Tucker were talented.
Belles has always done a good job molding QBs, so replacing Sammy Sasso, isn't the biggest of their worries.
Their defensive line will be their strength on D with division-one players Garrett Rand and Caleb Peart returning. I also think LB Tristan Vance could have a break out year.
The secondary looks like they will be in good shape despite losing every starter. Morris Kroma, Trey Robinson and Jaquan Mayberry can play.
Chandler- There are athletes running all over the field at Chandler...but what's new?
QB Bryce Perkins and RB Chase Lucas are national level recruits. WRs Danny Mahan, N'Keal Harry, Terrell Flanigan and Justin Jan make a nice receiving corp. Expect a potent offense.
All three of their starting DLs moved to four year schools. Jordan Hoyt to UC-Davis, Cruz Flores to NAU and Logan Gunkel to Adams State. Replacing them will be tough but J.W. Windsor transferring in from Basha helps and I really liked Kalif Roberts at ASU's big man challenge, he was unblockable.
The Wolves entire secondary will be D1 guys and they all are juniors. Lucas will play one corner, M.J. Harris will play opposite of him. Marcos transfer N'Keal Harry will play defense for the first time and he looked great in the Spring. Mason Moran already has an offer from Boston College.
When I talked to head coach Shaun Aguano, he was most fired up about an offensive line that will weigh almost 300 pounds across the board.
