Busy summer for Gaines

WASHINGTON, N.C. -- Houshun Gaines was one of the top performers at last weekend's Shrine Bowl Combine. Following the event, the Rocky Mount (N.C.) Nash Central defensive end spoke with Scout.com.

"Florida and Miami are my latest offers," Houshun Gaines. "They came on back-to-back days. It was a great experience and very humbling. I was just blown away and it was very exciting."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Gaines will visit Miami on June 21 and Florida on June 22.

Along with the Gators and Hurricanes, Gaines also holds offers from Boston College, Duke, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

While no date has been set, there is on other school he knows he will visit.

"I definitely plan to get back to Virginia Tech," he said. "I love Virginia Tech, so I definitely want to get up there again and see (defensive line) coach (Charley) Wiles, coach (Frank) Beamer and (defensive coordinator) coach (Bud) Foster."

The Nash Central star is taking his time with the recruiting process.

"I don't really think I can make a top five right now," Gaines said. "I'll probably end up making my top five or top six on August 1. Then I'll probably make my decision after the season."

At Saturday's combine, Gaines registered a 4.78-second 40-yard dash, 4.62-second 20-yard shuttle and bench pressed 185 pounds 19 times.

Update: Gaines will visit NC State this afternoon and then head to North Carolina this evening, where he will spend the night and visit tomorrow.
