Incoming Irish: Grant Blankenship
Four-star defensive end/outside linebacker Grant Blankenship of The Colony (Texas) High hit Notre Dame's campus last Thursday with his family checking in at 6-foot-6, 258-pounds. With already a physically-ready frame to compete at a high level, Blankenship could push for early playing time at Notre Dame, especially considering the youth of the depth chart at defensive end. But, as Blankenship knows, having the physical tools are only half the battle. "I try not to really think about that (early playing time)," Blankenship said. "I'll just come in and work my hardest regardless in all phases and it will play out how it's supposed to." "This offseason, I've been working out a lot with my trainer and that's been going really well," Blankenship said. "I've seen improvements in my conditioning for sure." Blankenship grew up in a Notre Dame household, though he's still aware of the learning curve that will come with moving away from home. "I'm a little nervous about how far away from home I'll be, to be honest," Blankenship said. "I've never been that far away before. But, I know that it's also a good mix of excitement, too." "I haven't really spoken with the coaching staff about my specific role yet, but I know that will happen when I'm up there," Blankenship said. "I'm expecting a lot on my plate." Blankenship says the Cardinal is the game he's most looking forward to in 2014. "I have a couple of buddies at Stanford and I love that rivalry," Blankenship said. "If if I'm not playing, I can't wait for it." Blankenship is a four-star prospect and is ranked as the No. 10 defensive end in the class of 2015. He inked with Notre Dame over offers from the likes of Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas.
