Rising Stars Notebook: Day 1

The first day of Washington's Rising Stars saw roughly 120 prospects hit the field with the Husky coaching staff right alongside them ready to run them through their paces. Here's a look at who impressed as well as who will likely be working out on Saturday...

Wenatchee (Wa.) OT Trey Adams - Adams showed much better footwork than he did last year when he was working out for Dan Cozzetto and earned his offer from the Dawgs. He looks like he's in really good shape and that he's been hitting the weights. He's still got that look that says "basketball player" right now, but so did Ben Riva before he graduated high school. Adams is a legit 6'6 and is more likely 6'7 and he currently weighs a little over 270 pounds. This was his first chance to really get in some work with coach Chris Strauser and he appeared to really take to it. He worked out during both sessions on Friday and will take part in the morning session on Saturday before heading home.

Centennial (Peoria, Az.) LB Dedrick Young - Impressive looking kid. Definitely passes the look test when you see him on the field compared to the other prospects. He took reps at both linebacker and tailback, but everyone sees him on defense. He's got good quickness in and out of his breaks and he looks to be pretty fluid when dropping into coverage. Washington has offered and word is that the Huskies could be moving up to the top of his short list after the visit.

Salesian (Los Angeles, Ca.) ATH Jeremy Kelly - Current Husky Jermain Kelly's younger brother showed impressive hands. He spots the ball well, high-points it and then goes up and gest it. He showed very soft hands all day. He also got some work in with the DBs, but most think he winds up at receiver in college.

Bellevue (Wa.) DL Ryan Bowman (2016) - Ryan, the younger brother of incoming freshman Shane Bowman, worked out with the linebackers most of the day and he was completely out of his element. He's a guy who's never really played in reverse so he looked pretty lost in coverage. That being said, he's got an impressive motor, he loves to compete and he's a quick study. Definitely a player to keep an eye on over the next year.

Bothell (Wa.) QB Ross Bowers - Word is that Bowers wanted the Husky staff to watch him throw and they sure got a good close look. First off, Bowers has started to fill out his upper body. He looks in great shape, but he's still got spindly legs. Bowers throws an accurate ball and he's got the arm to make all the throws. My questions about him have never been about his physical abilities, but had more to do with his decision-making. That is still something he needs to prove in pads, but on this day, he looked solid.

Beaverton (Or.) OL/DL Jared Hilbers - Talk about having an impressive offseason. When last I saw Jared in person, he looked tall and skinny. He's definitely filled out and added quite a bit of muscle to his frame. He looked to be about 6'6 and 280 pounds with room to grow. He's got a muscular frame and definitely isn't flabby. He had a solid day in drills and looks the part of a solid Pac 12 prospect.

New Westminster (BC) Secondary OT Harper Sherman - Sherman has a really impressive frame and appeared to hold his own in drills. It's hard to gauge Washington's interest in the talented prospect from up north, but he did nothing but help his cause with the way he moved and held his own today.

Gonzaga Prep (Spokane, Wa.) DL Evan Weaver (2016) - You cannot argue with Weaver's productivity as a pass-rusher (19 sacks as a sophomore last fall), but when you see him at a workout, without pads, he just isn't that impressive, at least from a physical standpoint. He's got a real skinny lower-body and he isn't a very fluid athlete. He too worked out with the linebackers and he too struggled. From the looks of it, he'll need to be a guy that is used situationally at the next level as a pass-rush specialist. I don't see him as an every down player, at least at the Pac 12 level.

Saturday Participants/Weekend Observers - Folsom (Ca.) QB Jake Browning (only observing); Gilbert (Az.) OL Steve Miller (only observing); Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Ca.) ATH Isaiah Renfro (only observing); Foster (Tukwila, Wa.) DT Paul Finau (2016) (sick today, plans to workout on Saturday); Lakes (Lakewood, Wa.) DL Benning Potoae (sick today, plans to workout on Saturday); Evergreen (Vancouver, Wa.) WR Justice Murphy (plans to workout on Saturday); Bellevue (Wa.) ATH Isaiah Gilchrist (2016) (plans to workout on Saturday); Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Ca.) LB Eddie Rudinski (plans to workout on Saturday); Mission Hills (San Marcos, Ca.) CB Dechaun Holiday (only observing); Oceanside (Ca.) CB Jordan Miller.

Surely there will be more guys to talk about, but these are some of the ones that we noticed on Friday and there could be more names to throw at you after we get a look at who is here for the two sessions on Saturday.
