Stephen Johnson is one of the most explosive athletes on both sides of the ball. He played primarily quarterback this past season but is being recruited as a receiver/cornerback.
Johnson worked out on both sides of the ball at the NIKE Camp in Oakland and was impressive. He measured out at a well built 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, clocked a 4.41-40, 4.16-shuttle and jumped 35" in the vertical.
He landed an invite to The Opening a few weeks later as a cornerback and has a big upside at the position. Johnson is both quick and fast with the top end speed to run with receivers down the field and the burst to close on the ball.
He's also explosive with the ball in his hands and rushed for over 1,000 yards last season at quarterback and had 30 all-purpose touchdowns.
"I'm going to commit at The Opening on July 8," Johnson said. "I was planning to wait it out a little and take my visits but I really want to focus on my senior season without any distractions so I'm going to do it early and shut it down."
"I'm basing my decision on the coaching staff and the plan they have me, I could care less what the school looks like," Johnson said. "All of these schools are going to be nice than San Leandro so I'm grateful for anything.
"The schools I'm closest with are Arizona State, UCLA, California and Oregon. I talk to all of them a lot and they show me a lot of love. UCLA is probably recruiting me the hardest. They came to my school so many times before offering, I kept wondering when it would happen.
"Now I hear from all of there coaches, the DB coach, WR coach and even Coach Mora. I still might do official visits after I commit but it's up to the school I choose. If they don't want me to, I won't. It would be fun but no big deal for me. Right now, I'm still trying to figure this out but I'll be ready to do it in a few weeks and excited to get it over with."
