Here are notes on five hot subjects out of the south.
S100 Safety Favors Five
No. 5 safety Jamal Peters out of Bassfield, Miss. named his top five Tuesday and you can read the full update here. Alabama is his top school with Mississippi State second, Florida State third, Ole Miss fourth, and LSU rounding out the top five. Keep an eye on Mississippi State here. Alabama is the leader today and it will always be in this race, but the in-state Bulldogs are a very close second. Peters is not ready to commit now, but he is one that could wake up and pull the trigger at any time.
Tar Heels Rolling
North Carolina is off to a great start with the 2015 recruiting class. It has been hot lately and is now No. 3 in the ACC and No. 12 overall on Scout's Team Rankings. UNC has added seven commits over the last three weeks led by four-star outside linebacker Johnathan Sutton out of Swansea, S.C. Emanuel McGirt (High three-star) and William Sweet (Scout 300 four-star) are two top offensive tackles. This class has plenty of good athletes in it as well and you can read more about it at InsideCarolina.com.
It looked like there would be at least three prospects committing to a school on July 4, but now it is down to two. 2016 Scout 100 wide receiver Sam Bruce of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas has pushed his decision back to next week. July 8 is the day at 9pm. He is down to Florida State, Miami, and Ohio State. The Seminoles are trending.
Three-star defensive tackle Quentez Johnson plans to announce his decision via twitter (@Teezy_Grind) Friday July 4. North Carolina State may be trending a little here. He was recently there for a camp and spent three days in Raleigh, N.C. Oregon and Tennessee are the other finalists. He should commit around 4pm ET.
Reserve (La.) East Saint John athlete Antonio Parks plans to commit around 2:30pm ET on Friday as well. He is down to a handful of schools like Arizona, Clemson, Houston, Purdue, and UCF.
Underclassman to Know
Jacksonville (Fla.) First Coast 2017 wide receiver D.J. Matthews has 17 scholarship offers. He has not even started his sophomore year yet. Schools like Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, and Miami have already offered the 5-foot-11, 160 pound sophomore. His "dream school" is FSU and the Seminoles have had plenty of success at First Coast over the years. His recruitment is a long way from being over, but Matthews is definitely a prospect to know.
Top DT Looking West?
Five-star Trenton Thompson was out in L.A. visiting USC last week and that is over 2,200 miles away from his home in Albany, Ga. The trip went well -- well enough for Thompson to now name the Trojans as his No. 2 school. He talks about the trip and his favorites here.
Georgia is No. 1 and the Bulldogs have been on top since it became the first school to offer about a year and a half ago. Thompson does not plan to make a decision any time soon. He will likely announce between December and signing day.
