West Recruiting Notebook

A look at the latest news and notes from out West in this week's notebook...

More Quarterback Shuffling

A tradition unlike any other is the quarterback shuffling that goes on each spring and sometimes, into the summer.

But with Anaheim (Calif.) Servite quarterback Travis Waller committing to Oregon on Tuesday, the list of available quarterbacks in the West, and the schools that need them, is starting to dwindle.

Waller became the latest to come off the board when he chose the Ducks, but that still leaves two more Elite 11 quarterbacks with decisions to be made.

Waller is headed to Oregon

Bothell (Wash.) quarterback Ross Bowers was offered by California over the weekend after taking an unofficial visit and was weighing a greyshirt opportunity with Washington, where his mother is the gymnastics coach and Colorado State

But the Cal offer has hastened things and now Bowers is set to announce his decision at The Opening and he'll choose between the Bears and Colorado State.

San Clemente (Calif.) quarterback Sam Darnold was also offered over the weekend, USC joining the mix.  Darnold is likely to announce following The Opening and Elite 11.

Announcements at The Opening

Langley will announce in Beaverton

With the Elite 11 Finals starting this weekend and spilling in to next week with The Opening in Beaverton, three more West prospects will announce their college commitments in addition to Ross Bowers.

The West's top prospect, Concord (Calif.) Clayton Valley defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie will choose from between Arizona and Tennessee.

San Leandro (Calif.) athlete Stephen Johnson will pick from Arizona State, Cal, Oregon, UCLA and Washington.

Pleasanton (Calif.) Foothill cornerback Isaiah Langley will announce from Cal, Oregon, UCLA and USC.

(Here are the West prospects that have been invited to The Opening)

Interestingly enough, last year, three players from the West announced their commitments in Beaverton and all three signed with a different school then they announced for with D.J. Calhoun committing to USC and signing with Arizona State, Naijiel Hale committing to Arizona and signing with Washington and Jaleel Wadood announcing for Cal and signing with UCLA.

Dylan Kane - DB - Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha - 2015
In what is one of the best classes in years in Hawaii, Kane is one of the new risers in the state.  Last week alone, Colorado, Oregon and Oregon State offered Kane and plenty more are likely to come between now and Signing Day.  A gifted athlete, Kane may be the top skill prospect in a Hawaiian class heavy in the trenches.
