The Opening: Midlands Preview (Defense)

Scout takes a closer look at The Opening, focusing in on the Midlands region defensive prospects...

Pos Rank Name HT WT High School State Team CB Holton Hill 6'2 180 Lamar (Houston) TX Mach Speed
Recruiting: Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, LSU, Alabama, Florida State
Quick Hitter: Hill is a defensive back with plus size. He could play corner or safety and does both for his high school team at times. CB Kendall Sheffield 5'11 180 Fort Bend Marshall  TX Fly Rush
Recruiting: Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, USC, UCLA, Oklahoma State, Florida State
Quick Hitter: Comes in to the event as the No. 2 prospect in the region. He has great top end speed and lock down skills. Not as physical as last year's top corner Tony Brown, but may be more polished in coverage. CB Kris Boyd 6'0 180 Gilmer TX Fly Rush
Recruiting: Texas, Texas A&M, Oregon, Florida State
Quick Hitter: Boyd is an excellent running back in high school, but will be a great defender in college. He is very physical and loves to come up and put his hands on receivers slowing them at the LOS. CB Jaylon Lane 6'1 177 Nacogdoches TX Apocalypse
Recruiting: Oklahoma State (Commit)
Quick Hitter: Lane earned an invite after a strong performance at the Houston NFTC. Another corner prospect in the state with plus size. Racked up more offers than any other prospect in East Texas. CB P.J.  Mbanasor 6'2 180 Hendrickson (Pflugerville) TX Landsharks
Recruiting: Oklahoma (Commit)
Quick Hitter: Are you starting to see a trend? The Midlands just seems loaded with huge defensive backs this class. Mbanasor was the guy at the Dallas NFTC, taking on all comers. S Justin Dunning 6'3 200 Whitehouse TX Vapor Carbon
Recruiting: Texas A&M (Commit)
Quick Hitter: Dunning missed his junior season with an ACL injury, but showed he is back earlier this spring at the NFTC, clocking a 4.5 40-yard dash is an impressive feat only 7-8 months out from surgery. S Larry Pryor 6'0 204 Sulphur Springs TX Vapor Carbon
Recruiting: Texas A&M (Commit)
Quick Hitter: Pryor is a ball-hawking style safety prospect. He is very physical attacking the football against the run, but is the same in coverage. Quarterback on offense, shows his football IQ. S Deionte Thompson 6'1 174 West Orange-Stark TX Landsharks
Recruiting: Alabama (Commit)
Quick Hitter: Thompson was the most impressive player regardless of position at the Houston NFTC walking away with Scout MVP honors. Loves safety, but has corner skills. S Deontay Anderson ('16) 6'1 192 Manvel (Alvin) TX Landsharks
Recruiting: Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor
Quick Hitter: Anderson is the lone underclassman from the Midlands to get invited. He earned DB MVP honors in Houston to punch his ticket. One of the most heavily pursued juniors in the state. S Will Sunderland 6'2 190 Midwest City OK Alpha Pro
Recruiting: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Arkansas
Quick Hitter: Sunderland is a rangy defender who just seems to be able to glide to the football. He is the perfect fit to play centerfield and disrupt an offense, should be a big defensive weapon in 7v7. LB Malik Jefferson 6'3 225 Poteet (Mesquite) TX Apocalypse
Recruiting: Alabama, Ohio State, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, Stanford, UCLA
Quick Hitter: The No. 1 prospect in the Midlands and the No. 2 prospect overall nationally. A great physical speciemen who will pass the EBT and test well in the Sparq.
DL Daylon Mack 6'1 316 Gladewater TX Landsharks
Recruiting: Texas A&M (Commit)
Quick Hitter: A big and athletic defender. He is easily over 300 pounds, but comes off the ball quick like a defensive end. He could be a dominant performer in the 1v1 portion as he also plays low to gain positioning.
