There are a handful of big questions heading into The Opening. It begins next Tuesday in Beavertown, Oregon.
The state of Florida leads the way with 27 selections. There are 162 participants in all. Here are ten story lines from the Sunshine state leading into the event.
7. Is Shawn Burgess-Becker better suited at receiver or safety?
What does it tell you when I say that Shawn Burgess-Becker (Coconut Creek Monarch) is good enough to star at Alabama on both sides of the ball at wide receiver and safety?
What's amazing is that he only started playing wide receiver last spring (2013). He's good on the offensive side of the ball. Burgess-Becker makes his share of splash plays. He's big, physical and runs very well. He also has terrific hands.
Burgess-Becker had his breakout last spring for Florida Fire at two different IMG events playing wide receiver. He also did very well as a rising junior at the Miami NFTC. I thought it was interesting to see his high school teammate and good friend Calvin Ridley make more of the splash plays at IMG last month. Ridley was off the charts good.
There's no doubt in my mind that he can be a very good wide receiver in Tuscaloosa. However, I believe he has more long term upside on defense. Here, he can use his same skills on this side of the ball. Burgess-Becker is also killer in run support. This kid has range and explosiveness as a defender.
He's listed as a safety for The Opening and this is the position where I hope he takes more reps. I am sure he will get some time at wide receiver as well. I just believe he can have a better showing on defense and I will be very curious how he stacks up amongst his safety peers.
