The Opening: Brandon Wimbush

Brandon Wimbush created a buzz at the Nike complex Sunday when got off to a hot start at the Elite 11. The Penn State talks about that and his future in Happy Valley here...

As the Elite 11 got rolling the first half of Sunday, the man out of the gates first looked to be Brandon Wimbush.

He landed on Scout's Hot List for day one and he is just thankful to have the opportunity to be competing in this event.

"It is awesome to be out here," said Wimbush. "There is so much money in these fields with the players that have been successful at what they have done.

"Just to be out learning from top quarterbacks and being able to compete with 18 other top quarterbacks in the country is an awesome experience."

The buzz started with Wimbush coming out built like a linebacker at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. Then all saw the darts he was throwing early.

It is something he has heard before, so he is used to the high praise on his right arm.

"It has been known that my arm strength is up there with some of the best of them, so that is one, and I also feel I can extend plays if I need to. My arm is probably talked about the most though."

Plenty of schools showed high interest in the Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep four-star, but it was Penn State that landed his commitment early in May.

"It felt like a brotherhood up there and being around the [coaching] staff, there was so much excitement," said Wimbush. "There was so much love for me there from the coaches, many of the other commitments were on me, and they all made it feel like home for me."

Now that Wimbush is committed, he is excited about the opportunity to play for one of the hottest coaches in the country the last few years.

"Coach [James] Franklin held his own down in the SEC and to bring a program like Vanderbilt back into conversation, that is big. I see him doing the same thing at Penn State.

"His personality attracts everyone around him and that is great. Coach Franklin has a lot of energy and I like about him too."

The Franklin personality definitely appealed to Wimbush and he is not planning to give other schools anymore attention.

"I am 100-percent committed to Penn State. Some schools still show some interest, but I am locked with Penn State.

Wimbush is the No. 11 quarterback and No. 191 overall prospect on Scout.
