Conspicuous by his absence

Notre Dame senior DaVaris Daniels wasn't listed among the Biletnikoff Award's 55-player pre-season watch list.

Well, he's not the first.

Prior to the 2009 season, Notre Dame sophomore-to-be Michael Floyd was inexplicably absent from the Biletnikoff Award watch list. Nearly five months later, an Irish receiver took home the coveted trophy awarded annually to the nation's top wide receiver -- though it wasn't Floyd.

Notre Dame junior Golden Tate won the award, collecting an aggregate 1,855 receiving/rushing/punt return yards with 18 touchdowns (one rushing, one PR) and a then program-record 93 receptions.

Injured for the middle portion of the '09 season (from halftime of Game 3 through the conclusion of Game 8) Floyd responded to the notable nation snub with a remarkable start, exploding during Notre Dame's first 2.5 contests for 13 receptions, an obscene 358 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.

Fast forward to the present and another logical Irish addition to the Biletnikoff list, senior DaVaris Daniels, is conspicuous in his absence. Daniels finished last season with 49 receptions, 745 yards, and 7 touchdowns.

Among the 55 are nine Irish opponents for 2014 from nine different teams:

-- Nelson Agholor (USC)

-- Quinshad Davis (UNC)

-- Devin Funchess (UM)

-- Rashad Greene (FSU)

-- Christian Jones (Northwestern)

-- Ty Montgomery (Stanford)

-- DeVante Parker (Louisville)

-- Jaelen Strong (ASU)

-- Jordan Taylor (Rice)

2012 Notre Dame signing day defector Deontay Greenberry also made the list entering his junior season at the University of Houston.

In theory, pass-catchers may be added to the in-season watch list over the course of the 2014 season, though Rule 2 listed among the award's eligibility and voting criteria could preclude Daniels' addition. It states:

2.) He must not have been declared to be ineligible to participate in Division lA football by the NCAA at the time of any vote of the Biletnikoff Award’s National Selection Committee.

Daniels was suspended from the University for the spring semester for academic issues but was reinstated for the 2014 summer session and school year.
