It was the classic story of showing up to camp, having a good day, and receiving an offer for Chicago Mount Carmel defensive lineman Kevin Thurmon.
Thurmon stands 6-foot-3, 250 pounds and came out to Wisconsin one day camp June 15th. After a big performance, the Badgers kept in touch and offered Thurmon this weekend.
"They contacted me on twitter and then sent me an official offer letter saying they were offering me a full ride," Thurmon said.
After the camp last month, Thurmon had a good feeling about his performance.
"It went well, I think I did very well," Thurmon said. "Some things I could have worked on to get better. But overall I got better throughout the day."
He also got some advice from the Badger coaching staff that day.
"Some of the things they told me to work on were my hips and my hands and getting off the ball faster," Thurmon said. "Things like that. Endurance and just to keep going and keep fighting."
The staff kept in contact with with Thurmon, but the offer was still somewhat of a surprise.
"I was excited," Thurmon said. "And very happy, but I couldn't have done it without God and my head coach Frank Lenti, plus the rest of the coaching staff at my school always making me better."
He added, "My family was also very happy and proud of me, they said I have come a long way."
And as for what Thurmon likes about the Badgers?
"I like the coaches and the players that I have have met seem cool," Thurmon said. "But I have to go back there to see the whole school."
When Thurmon makes a return trip, he's got several things in mind he will be looking for.
"When I go back I'll be looking for the academics and how the school works and stuff like that," Thurmon said.
