Here are news and notes on top prospects and storylines around the south...
George Campbell popping earlier than planned? That looks to be the case. A decision is expected within the next couple of weeks by the No. 57 prospect in the country on Scout. Florida State is the school trending at this time. Florida, who was looked at as the favorite not too long ago is in the mix as are a few others. The 6-foot-3, 190 pound athlete out of Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake is one of the premiere prospects in America.
Another Florida prospect is closing in on a decision -- that is Christian Pellage. The four-star offensive tackle out of Brooksville Nature Coast has plenty of options to choose from, but the school trending is an out-of-state school, South Carolina. The Gamecocks had Pellage on campus July 25 and a decision could come very soon. He has spent time on plenty of other campuses this summer too -- Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and Georgia to name a few. A decision should come Friday at 2pm ET.
Scout 100 cornerback Donte Jackson leaning towards the in-state school now? Jackson, a star at The Opening early in July has moved up to the No. 3 prospect in Louisiana and into the national top 100 on Scout. He was offered by Georgia back in the spring and he named the Dawgs his leader. He continued to call UGA his leader after a three say trip to Athens, Ga. in July, but since that visit, Jackson has visited LSU twice. The Tigers are now trending for the elite talent out of Jefferson Riverdale. A summer decision is still unlikely, but not out of the question.
Auburn was the first school to offer Jauntavius Johnson, a defensive tackle out of Lincoln, Ala. and it picked up his commitment Wednesday. Johnson is a 6-foot-2, 335 pound senior who will likely play more nose guard. He is a space-eater and he is one of those defensive linemen that will free up others to make plays around him. He can be that anchor in the middle of the Tiger defense down the road.
Five-star defensive tackle Trenton Thompson announced earlier this week that he will commit Tuesday August 12. Thompson will commit to Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, or USC. It will take play at his high school, Westover, and that is in Albany, Ga. Thompson is the No. 6 overall prospect on Scout. He will practice first, then announce his decision at a press conference expected to begin around 7pm ET.
