"My coach texted me saying to call the coach from Virginia and my dad had already been in contact with them," Smalling said. "So then I called my dad and he gave me the big news."
The offer came as a surprise for the 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect who has just started really seeing schools show a lot of interest in him.
"I was surprised because I hadn't heard from Virginia before," Smalling said. "So I was surprised."
But the first offer was a feeling that Smalling won't soon forget.
"It feels good and knowing that my hard work has finally been recognized," Smalling said.
As for Virginia, it is a school that Smalling plans to learn more about over the coming years as his recruitment moves forward.
"I don't really know much about them so I have to go do some homework on them," Smalling said. "The one thing that I can say about UVA is that they are a division one college which is great."
This offseason has been a big one for Smalling, who is expected to play a big roll on the field for Brother Rice's offense.
"I think I have improved on my speed, route running, and strength," Smalling said.
