2014 D2 Preseason Preview

Top 10 teams, preseason all-state team and more inside...

Division-Two

The Front Runner- I am not going to name one. I think D2 is very wide open.

The Contenders

Campo Verde- CV is strong in the trenches and is coming off a 9-3 season, two of those loses came to a very good Mesquite team.

Centennial- Dedrick Young is a workhorse and has a massive offensive line to run behind, as long as he stays healthy, the Coyotes will contend for a title.

Chaparral- They have a new HC and new OC but they have enough talent returning n both sides of the ball to make another trip to the title game.

Deer Valley- The Skyhawks won’t surprise anyone this year. It all starts up front and they have possibly the best defensive line in the state.

Liberty- Tyler Wyatt is one of the best athletes in the state. He leads an explosive offense, if the defense can get a few more stops (allowed 28 points or more in 7 games last year), they could surpass their 8 win total from last year.

Mesquite- Did anyone expect the 2013 season they had? 11-2 despite not having many superstars. Jim Jones is a heck of a coach and hired proven winners in Roy Lopez and Tom Joseph.

Salpointe- Can they replace the talent they had? Hard to do, last year’s team was special. But they have enough players returning to make another run.

In The Mix

Ironwood Ridge- It seems like every year Ironwood Ridge is underestimated. They have been one of the lowkey winners in the state.

Marcos de Niza- Some great players transferred out but there is still talent at Marcos. How they play early will be huge.

Paradise Valley- Donnie Yantis left Greg Davis some players. Davis has always had a productive offense, expect the Trojans to put up some points.

Sleepers- Sahuaro, Cienega, Poston Butte, Sunnyslope, Tucson, St. Mary’s

Questions: Has there ever been a year this wide open? Each team at the top has questions to answer. Defending champ Salpointe loses a ton of talent, Centennial breaks in a new QB and three new OLs, Chaparral has almost a completely new coaching staff. It is up for grabs this year. Can Sunnyslope repeat what they did last year? How will Marcos be without Roy Lopez? Can Paul Moro bring his winning ways to Poston Butte?
