Greater Houston Notebook (8/20/14) has had lots of activity in the Midlands region. Today, we look at a few recruiting notes from athletes in the Greater Houston area from last week and the early portions of this current week.

West Coast Swing
There’s no denying it, programs on the west coast have done well getting solid athletes out of the state of Texas. Last week it was Manvel defensive back William Lockett with a UCLA commitment. On Tuesday, it was Cy Ranch offensive lineman Zachary Kinninger, who will take his talents to Fresno State over other options like Houston and New Mexico.

Verbally committed to Texas State!! #EatEmUp
That was the tweet from Stafford defensive tackle Josh Uluocha (@SuccessfulJosh_) after making the call to the Texas State coaches last Friday telling them that he wanted to join the TXST19 movement.

Keeping Cards, and Intentions Close
AT the Houston Touchdown Club last week, several of the area’s top athletes were present. On the defense, two of the nations finest were present with cornerbacks Holton Hill (Lamar) and Kendall Sheffield (Marshall). The two of them combined have well over 50 offers and fan bases from schools across the country are waiting to hear what they plan to do as far as visits. Well, they will all have to wait like the rest of us.

With Sheffield, he has already decided that he will choose a school at the Under Armour game in January 2015. This summer he named a Top 12. As for where he will visit amongst his 12…

“It will take some time to decide where to go. They are all good programs and ones where I can get a good education,” Sheffield, who visited Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU over the summer unofficially, said.

As for Hill, similarly, he’s not decided where he wants to go either. But that process is going on in his home right now.

“I’m in the process of narrowing things down now. I don’t have any for sure schools yet, but it’s coming soon,” Hill said. “It will come down to whatever school I fit into best and which one feels close to home. I’m trying to narrow my list down so that I can take all five of my official visits. I do want to take all five.”

Offered, Then Committed (to another sport)
Late last week, Travis athlete Spencer Griffin was offered by Utah State, for football. But instead of letting that recruitment play out, Griffin decided that he would pursue another sport by committed to Stephen F. Austin for baseball.
