It was a nice opening act for Tony Jones. This junior running back transferred from St. Petersburg (Fla.) Catholic to Bradenton IMG Academy roughly six months ago. They took on a good squad from Tallahassee in Godby high school. Jones and his running back mates (Jack Wegher and Taven Birdow) all had stellar games.
”I had some butterflies but after the first two carries I was fine,” Jones said. “We were mixing it up with our three backs. We just kept swapping out. Plus, I am in better shape. I am lighter but faster.
Jones came in at 217-pounds. He was close in the 208-range last night. He showed off his speed, as well as his power, vision and cutting ability against Godby. He finished with seven carries for 120-yards.
”The transition was hard,” Jones said. “It was different. At my old school you could kind of do [train] whatever you wanted. I was the main guy. Not now.”
According to Jones three schools have offered him – USF, Cincinnati and now Florida. In fact, after busting off a 48-yard run in the first quarter Jones jumped up and off the ground doing the Gator chomp.
”That is my favorite school since I was a little kid. They are my favorite team right now but it’s early. My dad says that I am young and I have a long time. They are my leader followed by South Florida and Cincinnati.
Jones is a four-star recruit in the 2016 class.
