MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — Long Beach (Calif.) five-star cornerback and Under Armour All-American Iman Marshall is close to knowing where he will be for his five allotted official visits.
Narrowing his focus on potential colleges has allowed him to ignore
extraneous recruiting chatter to concentrate on winning a CIF title this fall.
“Yeah. I’m happy that I have that out of the way,” said Marshall. “I
understand what bowl game I’m playing in, but now it’s time to just
focus on high school football each and every week. It’s game time.”
Marshall will officially visit Notre Dame, Florida State, LSU and
Michigan, with Texas and Oklahoma vying for the final spot on his trip
Lost in all of the buzz of Marshall heading out of state for official
visits are the two universities in Los Angeles. Both UCLA and USC are still very much
a part of his recruitment.
“I have great interest in UCLA,” said Marshall. “They got Jim Mora, a
great coach. He’s a very good defensive minded coach. And then you got
coach Meat (Demetrius Martin). He’s a great coach too.
“Ishmael Adams balled out (against Virginia). Shout out to him too, with
a punt return and a pick six today. They got UCLA’s defense looking
While Poly was blowing out Crenshaw 54-14 Saturday, Marshall already
had intel on the Trojans' big win against Fresno State from the side lines.
“I have real good interest in USC as well,” said Marshall. “They’re a
great team. They play young dudes, so like I’ve said before, I just
want to see how the coaching is up there. See how everybody reacts to
the coaches, the coaching style and the environment.
“I see my guy JuJu (Smith) did a good job today for USC. Shout out to him for
how he played.”
Marshall plans to take unofficial visits to both USC and UCLA as the
season progresses and Poly moves their games to Friday nights rather
than Saturday afternoons.
“They both have a lot of tough games,” said Marshall. “You got UCLA
playing Stanford at home, so I’m going to be at that game. Also, the
UCLA-SC game is going to be a real big game.
“Whenever I have the opportunity to go and check out any of the local
schools, I’m going to try do it as much as possible to see how the
coaches are. How the players react to the coaching, their coaching
style and stuff like that.”
For Poly, Marshall has become an emotional and vocal leader as a
senior. Sounding off for the Jackrabbits in pregame, Marshall has a presence.
As he left the field after dominating Crenshaw, even the Mater Dei
coaches preparing for the following contest felt compelled to comment.
“That kid is a baller,” said the assistant coach. “The Marshall kid is
a straight baller.”
And that’s nothing new for a high school player who has been considered
a top recruit since his sophomore year.
“Being the guy, it takes on great responsibility,” said Marshall. “Like
a lot of people say, it’s different when you’re on the outside looking
in. When you have to take on that role, it’s something different.
“You got to understand you always have to put the team first and
understand that you’re the leader, so you always got to talk the talk
but walk the walk.”
Putting his team first, a decision on a college will not happen until
the season is over.
“As of right now, I don’t know where I’m going to make that decision
at,” Marshall. “I think more and more I’m going to wait until signing
day to see how everything goes and play it all the way out.”
Local love from Marshall
