King a Rising Prospect

Recruiting is on the rise for Manvel (Texas) 2016 quarterback Deriq King, who already holds offers from Baylor, UCLA, Texas Tech, Michigan State, Louisville, and Clemson.

"Things have been going pretty well. Recruiting really picked up over the summer, but right now I'm just focusing on Manvel and our team," he said.

"I think I'm a pretty good quarterback. Maybe I'm a little undersized...but I'm athletic and can extend plays."

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound athlete started the season off with a win, helping his team nab a 35-10 win over Houston (Texas) Westfield on Thursday night.

"I just think the whole team did really well tonight, especially defense. Offense played really well, too, so that was good," he said.

King himself was a playmaker, helping the offense with a 64-yard rushing touchdown.

"That was called as a pass-play, but it broke down so I just took off and made a play," he said.

His athleticism is just one of the reasons other schools are calling, including Texas, Texas A&M, and Ohio State.

"I think I'm a pretty good quarterback. Maybe I'm a little undersized, but I think I'm pretty good. I think I have a really good arm. I'm athletic and I can extend plays," he said.

Over the weekend, King headed to Waco to take in the Baylor season opener versus SMU.

Aside from recruiting, the athlete says he's ready for week two versus Houston (Texas) North Shore.

"I'm looking forward to getting back out here and competing with my teammates," he said.
