Powell nearing double-digit offers

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Cornell Powell is one of the top 2016 wide receivers in the country. The Rose playmaker spoke with Scout.com about the latest developments in his recruitment.

”I’m up to nine offers,” said Cornell Powell. “Ohio State was the latest. I called coach (Urban) Meyer and he offered me himself, which made it even more special. We also talked about my film and how I was doing.

“It means a lot and it’s an honor to be recruited by big school like that. They just win games and it’s a big-time program. Hopefully, I’ll be able to go up there during my bye week and talk to coach (Urban) Meyer in person.”

Along with Buckeyes, some of Powell's other offers include Clemson, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest. Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn are also showing significant interest.

For a while, it appeared to be shaping up as an in-state battle between North Carolina and NC State. Where do things stand now?

”Now that Ohio State has offered, they’re definitely in that group with Carolina and State,” said the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Powell. “I’d say those are my top three schools and they’re all even.”

Besides his visit to Ohio State, Powell said one of his next trip will likely be to Clemson. He also plans to go games at North Carolina, NC State and East Carolina.

Powell said he will likely narrow his list to seven next spring and then cut it to three at some point before making his decision.

Rose is 2-0 and continues their season Friday at Nash Central.
