A look at where recruiting stands with key prospects in the East Region's 2017 class

The latest recruiting trends with key prospects in the East Region's 2017 class.

Scout has its Scout 300 Trend Meter, and the in-depth piece breaks down the recruitment of every uncommitted prospect in the Scout 300. It will be updated next week.

Where prospects from the East in the Scout 300 were trending can be found in the inset story, but there is a lot more to recruiting than following the top 300 players in the class, and there are plenty of quality players outside of the Scout 300 in the East region.

The dead period ends Thursday as coaches begin in-home visits again, and prospects will be signing their national letters of intent Feb. 1 But the time leading up to then is crazy, which makes this the perfect time to update the East Region Trend Meter.

This feature will be updated numerous more times between now and signing day. Have some fun as the madness starts back up and enjoy the East Region Trend Meter:

http://www.scout.com/player/199408-louis-acceus/news?year=2016

Louis Acceus, one of the top uncommitted outside linebackers in the East, was supposed to officially visit Rutgers the weekend of Dec. 2-4, but that is in question because his Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph squad is playing in the state title game Dec. 2. He made an in-season unofficial visit to Virginia Tech, and he also thinks highly of North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Maryland. This recruitment has a lot of moving parts, so expect some ebbs and flows with school choices.

Trending: Maryland

Dec. 8 update: Acceus changed his top four to Maryland, Virginia Tech, N.C. State and Indiana, but the Terps continue to lead. He told Scout he was trying to set up official visits and make them with his brother, but he is yet to settle on dates. He is not making any official visits this weekend, so they will have to wait until January to make the visits.

Trending: Maryland

Dec. 23 update: Acceus is in the process of setting up official visits, and Maryland remains his leader but if he continues to wait and wait, the Terps could fill up. We will keep this trending toward Maryland, but Indiana is a school worth watching.

Trending: Maryland

Jan. 10 update: Acceus set his official visits, and they begin this weekend with a trip to N.C. State. He will be at Virginia Tech the following week and conclude his official visit schedule with a Jan. 27 trip to Maryland. Each of these trips are vital since classes are filling up and Acceus has not made a ton of visits. Maryland has long been the leader and remains that, but there is plenty of room for movement in the final three weeks.

http://www.scout.com/player/201987-mekhi-becton

Highland Springs (Va.) offensive tackle Mekhi Becton Mekhi Becton has not tipped his hand throughout the recruiting process. What we do know is that his official visit to Michigan earlier this month went extremely well and definitely helped the Wolverines' chance. Despite the visit, sources close to him feel like Becton will choose to stay closer to home and commit to Virginia or Virginia Tech. This one seems to be far from over as his team is a favorite to win another state championship, and the next three games are all on Saturdays. So, his next official visit likely will not take place until January. Penn State and Pittsburgh are also worth watching.

Trending: Virginia

Dec. 8 update: Becton says he is still evaluating all his options, but Virginia, Virginia Tech and Michigan appear to be the main contenders. The only official visit he took was to Michigan last month. Although it was a success, sources close to Becton believe he will stay close to home and commit to Virginia or Virginia Tech.  He has an official visit to Virginia Tech tentatively set for Jan. 20 and will likely be scheduling one to Virginia. Penn State and Pittsburgh could possibly get visits, but are long shots. Regardless, this could go until signing day.

Trending: Virginia

Dec. 23 update: Becton still says he is considering 10 schools. But Michigan, Virginia and Virginia Tech are the ones with the best change to land the top-ranked offensive tackle in Virginia. He took an official visit to Michigan, and he is supposed to officially visit Virginia Tech on Jan. 20 and he is expected to visit Virginia as well. Louisville and Michigan State are also candidates for official visits. Virginia still has slight edge, but Virginia Tech had two in-homes with Becton earlier this month, and Michigan is still heavily in the mix.

Trending: Virginia

Jan 10 update: Becton trimmed his list to Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. The top offensive tackle in Virginia, who only took an official to Michigan, is supposed to visit Virginia Tech on Jan. 27. Nothing else is scheduled, but he will likely at least check out Virginia one more time before signing day.The in-state schools have the edge, but Michigan is still in the picture.

Jan. 10 update: Raheem Blackshear, who is committed to Temple, added a pair of Big Ten offers during the holidays and he will make official visits to both schools. He begins his January with an official visit this weekend to Temple, and he will be at Michigan State next weekend. He is set to officially visit Rutgers on Jan, 27, and then make a decision after that. Can new Owls coach Geoff Collins keep Blackshear in the fold?

http://www.scout.com/player/196176-corey-bolds

Defensive tackle Corey Bolds of Paramus (N.J.) Catholic made an official visit to Penn State earlier this month, and it surpassed his expectations and the Nittany Lions are now heavily involved with him. Official visits to California and Michigan State are in the works, and Bolds said Clemson and Georgia remain in touch with him. Penn State suddenly has a lot of defensive tackle prospects on its board, so room could run out quickly.

Trending: Penn State

Dec. 8 update: Bolds' recruitment could take some interesting turns. He made an official visit to Penn State last month but the Nittany Lions since landed defensive tackle Fred Hansard and are in the market for several other defensive tackles so Bolds may look elsewhere. If he makes a visit to Cal, that could be the place he winds up.

Trending: Cal

Dec 23 update: Bolds' recruitment slowed recently as he has not made an official visit since a trip to Penn State in November. He could make an official visit to Rutgers the weekend of Jan. 27, but right now things are on the quiet side. Cal could get more involved as well.

Trending: Cal

Jan. 10 update: This one is an interesting recruitment. Bolds is set to officially visit Rutgers on Jan. 20, and he is set to trip to Ole Miss the weekend of Jan. 27. He is also hearing a bit from Penn State, where he officially visited in November. Do not be surprised if another school crops up late and gets involved with Bolds.

Since decommitting from Duke in the spring, Richmond (Va.) Benedictine inside linebacker Ellis Brooks is taking his time with recruiting process. But things are heating up. He will take an unofficial visit to Ohio State on Saturday and head to Maryland Maryland for an official visit Dec. 9-11. According to sources, some of the other schools in the mix are Duke, Northwestern and Syracuse . However, there appears to be a clear favorite.

Trending: Maryland

Dec 8 update: Brooks will take his first official visit to Maryland this weekend. The Terrapins continue to be the favorite to land the No. 3 inside linebacker in the East. Duke, Northwestern and Indiana are also in the picture and could eventually get visits, but Maryland will be tough to beat. He has not set a date for his decision.

Trending: Maryland

Dec. 23 update: Brooks was offered by Oregon a few weeks ago and will take an official visit Jan. 20. He will also take an official to Northwestern on Jan. 13. However, Maryland, which he visited earlier this month, remains the favorite.

Jan. 10 update: Brooks is seeing a late spike in his recruitment. The East's No. 3 inside linebacker has picked up a flurry of new offers from schools such as LSU, Ole Miss and Oregon. Brooks will take an official visit to Northwestern this weekend and fly to LSU Sunday for a mid-week official. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Brooks will then head to Oregon on Jan. 20 and Notre Dame on Jan. 27. Brooks has already visited Maryland and they are the favorite, but keep an eye on LSU.

http://www.scout.com/player/199966-elijah-conliffe

Hampton (Va.) defensive tackle Elijah Conliffe was an Alabama lean for months. But after his recent official visit to Penn State, the Nittany Lions moved ahead. A few other schools to watch include Louisville, Ole Miss and Virginia Tech. But in the end, this will likely be a two-horse race between Alabama and Penn State. The No. 19 defensive tackle has an official tentatively set for Ole Miss on Jan. 28 of next year and he is expected to schedule one for Alabama in the near future.

Trending: Penn State

Dec. 8 update: Not much changed with Conliffe's recruitment. Penn State still leads and Alabama is also a strong contender. According to Conliffe, Tennessee, Ole Miss and West Virginia are also in the mix. However, this is shaping up to be a Alabama-Penn State battle. The nation's 20th-ranked defensive tackle has no timetable for a decision, and it could be signing day when he makes his commitment.

Trending: Penn State

Dec. 23 update: Conliffe named Alabama his leader in the summer and Penn State moved to the top of his list during the fall. Conliffe is still not anywhere close to making his decision. He will take an official visit to Miami on Jan. 13 and is tentatively set to go to Alabama on Jan. 27. That leaves Jan. 20 as the lone open date for an official. According to Conliffe, the trip will either go to Florida, OIe Miss and Tennessee. A lot could change in the next month, but Penn State is still the favorite.

Jan. 10 update: This is a tough one to predict. Conliffe named Alabama his leader in the summer and then Penn State moved to the top in the fall. Now, Conliffe took a step back and he said he does not have a leader. Florida, Tennessee and Ole Miss are also in the mix. In regards to visits, the only thing tentatively set is Alabama on Jan. 27 and he could also visit Florida on Jan. 20. Although all schools are technically under consideration, this should come down to Alabama and Penn State, but do not count out Florida, especially if it gets him on campus for an official. He will make his commitment Jan. 31.

http://www.scout.com/player/205125-victor-dimukeje

Victor Dimukeje, one of the top uncommitted defensive ends in the East, has a top five of Wake Forest, Duke, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and Maryland but there is certainly a lot of momentum for Wake Forest. Dimukeje likes the coaching staff and the school, and his close friend and Baltimore Boys' Latin teammate Braden Atkinson is committed to the Demon Deacons. If schools try to recruit Atkinson, it could turn into a package deal.

Dec. 8 update: Dimukeje will make his first official visit this weekend when he visits Virginia Tech, and it is a huge trip. The Hokies have momentum from a tremendous season, and a bunch of commits and uncommitted prospects will be on campus. Dimukeje also plans to make a few trips in January, but that he chose to visit Virginia Tech this weekend instead of Maryland and did not visit Rutgers on Dec. 2 (a big visit weekend) suggests he is looking toward the ACC.

Joshua Fedd-Jackson's recruitment took an interesting turn Tuesday when UCLA popped out of nowhere and extended an offer. If the Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph's offensive guard prospect makes an official visit to the Westwood campus, it would put the Bruins in great position. However, Illinois and Boston College each put in a lot of work with Fedd-Jackson, and it is close with both of them. His coach played at Boston College, so that connection exists.

Indiana continues to push hard for Middletown (N.J.) Mater Dei receiver Eddie Lewis, who is planning an official visit to campus after the season. He made an unofficial to Bloomington, Ind., in the offseason, and the trip in December or January should seal the deal. However, first Lewis has a state championship game to play the first weekend of December.

Dec 8 update: Lewis' recruitment took a few interesting turns the last two weeks. First, Rutgers visited his school twice (one a week) since the contact period began. Second, Indiana had a coaching change and while the staff remains mostly intact after defensive coordinator Tom Allen was promoted, it could change the Hoosiers' thinking. Also, Connecticut visited Lewis at school and is interested.

He decommitted from Rutgers right after an official visit to Iowa, but was back in Piscataway, N.J., for its regular season finale at home against the Nittany Lions. This weekend he will be at Penn State, which could utilize Lovett as a running back or safety. One thing is for sure, though, the interest Lovett did not get in the spring is there now.

Dec 8 update: Lovett did not make his scheduled official visit to Maryland last weekend, and he will be one of more than a dozen recruits on Rutgers' campus this weekend. The one-time Rutgers commit remains in frequent contact with the Scarlet Knights' coaching staff, but Iowa is pushing hard and selling the offensive fit. Michigan State is also showing interest.
