Robert Mayo

ACC, Big Ten programs first to offer fast-rising 2018 WR Robert Mayo

South Riding (Va.) Freedom standout Robert Mayo is one of the top wide receivers in the state and spoke with Scout about his recruitment.

Robert Mayo had a breakout season last fall and his recruitment is picking up steam.

NC State became the latest school to offer last week.

"They're in the ACC and it's a big offer," said the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Mayo, who also holds offers from Maryland, Old Dominion and Charlotte. "They're a good team and they have a lot of good players, so it means a lot to me.

"I've been talking to (cornerbacks) coach (George) Barlow and we have a pretty close relationship. He's told me I'm one of their top targets in the 2018 class and that they would help me reach my full potential at NC State.

"I actually visited for the Miami game last fall. It was nice and I liked the campus. The fans were also great and showed a lot of enthusiasm. I was really impressed with the atmosphere. My favorite parts were watching the players warm up and the actual game. I'm going back down for a spring practice."

Mayo's last trip was Maryland a few weeks ago.

"The visit was nice and I really liked the campus," Mayo said. "They're building a lot of new facilities and I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like when they're done. I've been twice and I'm going back for a spring practice. I want to watch the receivers and see how I would fit in the offense."

"I spent the most time with (offensive coordinator) coach (Walt) Bell. He's a recruiting me and he's a really good guy. He really likes me and we have a really good relationship.

"I like the entire coaching staff and they're doing a great job. They kept saying that they want to keep the top guys at home and that stuck out to me. They want to get all the best players in the DMV to come to Maryland."

Besides visits to Maryland and NC State, Mayo plans to visit Duke and Old Dominion this spring.
