Devon Williams is a great looking player on both sides of the ball and shows the ability to play three or even four positions at the next level.
He played quarterback, receiver and safety this past season and at 6-4, 200 pounds, his frame and how much size he puts on will likely determine where he plays in college. He could play as a big receiver, stay at safety or bulk up in to an outside linebacker but he his upside is obvious.
He runs well and has very good body control. He's a fluid athlete with a lot of range on defense and covers a ton of ground. It's easy to envision him playing at about 6-4, 225-230 pounds in a few years as an every down 'backer who can blitz off the edge, play in space and drop in coverage.
"I honestly don't have a preference between offense or defense, I'll play anywhere," Williams said. "I just want to play, whatever gets me on the field fastest is what I want to play. I just love football so wherever my team needs me, I'll do it."
On the recruiting front, Williams has seen his stock really rise in the last month. The Oregon Ducks were his first offer and Oregon State, UCLA and just recently, Florida State all jumped in to the mix as well.
"It was great to get that offer from Oregon," Williams said. "It's always great to get that first one. The new staff at Oregon came in and I talked with Coach Heyward and he's the one who offered. I definitely have interest there and I would like to take an official visit in the fall.
"The UCLA offer was big too, especially since I have two teammates, Moses Robinson-Carr and Morrell Osling who just signed there and we're really good friends. I have visited UCLA before and it's a great school with a lot of potential. Demetrice Martin is the coach recruiting me and I have a good relationship with him."
The offer from the Noles came just two days ago.
"I wasn't expecting that one," Williams said. "That's a big time school with a great football tradition. I'm definitely giving them a look and would love to take an official visit out there as well.
"USC is another school that is showing a lot of interest and could be close to offering. I talk with them almost every day and I have already visited there and liked it a lot. They have a lot going for them right now so hopefully it happens, we'll see."
As for a timeframe for a decision, Williams said he hasn't decided yet.
"I would like to take my official visits if I can," Williams said. "At the same time, I could see myself making an early decision as well if I feel good about a school. I'm just going to play things out and and see what happens. I'm not going to rush anything, just whenever it feels right, that's when I'll go ahead and do it."
